Itawamba Community College’s office for America’s Veterans has received information from the Department of Defense regarding major changes to the Tuition Assistance policy which could affect area veterans and soldiers who are either enrolled in or returning to college, according to Bob Walker, director of student aid.

First, tuition assistance requests must be submitted and approved by an education counselor before individuals begin classes July 24 or after, Walker said. “This change is huge for Mississippi soldiers. In the past, a solider had up to seven days after a course began to submit a request for tuition assistance, and once submitted to an education counselor had up to 30 days to approve the request. This is no longer the policy.”

Walker said that Mississippi has one education counselor to process GoArmyEd applications for tuition assistance. According to information received, during January 1,702 applications were processed for Mississippi soldiers. Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

If a course is not approved prior to the course start date, there are no exceptions. Walker said that in order to allow an education counselor adequate time to process and approve the tuition assistance request prior to the beginning date, soldiers must input their TA requests as soon as possible, but not later than 14 days prior to the course start date.

In addition, no fees to include any supporting instructional fees will be paid using tuition assistance for classes with a start date of July 24 or after. The only cost that will be funded is the actual cost of tuition, up to $250 per semester hour, not to exceed 16 semester hours per fiscal year.

Walker said that grades below ‘C’ for undergraduate work will be recouped for classes with a July 24 start date.

The final change, Walker said, involves the mandate of strict requirements regarding school access to military institutions.
