Community College’s office for America’s Veterans has received information from
the Department of Defense regarding major changes to the Tuition Assistance
policy which could affect area veterans and soldiers who are either enrolled in
or returning to college, according to Bob Walker, director of student aid.
First, tuition assistance requests
must be submitted and approved by an education counselor before individuals
begin classes July 24 or after, Walker said. “This change is huge for Mississippi
soldiers. In the past, a solider had up to seven days after a course began to
submit a request for tuition assistance, and once submitted to an education
counselor had up to 30 days to approve the request. This is no longer the

According to information received, during January 1,702 applications were
processed for Mississippi soldiers. Applications are processed on a first-come,
If a course is not approved prior to
the course start date, there are no exceptions. Walker said that in order to
allow an education counselor adequate time to process and approve the tuition
assistance request prior to the beginning date, soldiers must input their TA
requests as soon as possible, but not later than 14 days prior to the course
In addition, no fees to include any
supporting instructional fees will be paid using tuition assistance for classes
with a start date of July 24 or after. The only cost that will be funded is the
actual cost of tuition, up to $250 per semester hour, not to exceed 16 semester
hours per fiscal year.
Walker said that grades below ‘C’
for undergraduate work will be recouped for classes with a July 24 start date.
