Role of the Workforce Staff: Project specialists and staff trainers serve as training consultants along with managing the procedural aspects of accessing state training funds. As training consultants, staff assist in the areas of training outlines/course curriculum, evaluation methods, accessing facilities and educational supplies, monitoring training for quality and ensuring measurable impact of the training.

These are some questions a project specialist considers when developing a training project:

  • Is the skill transferable?
  • Is the skill valuable in a variety of occupations?
  • Does the assistance provide benefit to employees as well as employers?
  • Can the impact of the training be defined and measured?
  • Does the project improve the community we live and work in by providing valuable training to those who are in education, law enforcement, child care, or fire fighting services?
  • Does training help improve the overall skill level of a workforce group?

Documentation of all training is required in accordance with state guidelines. Meeting customer needs while balancing accountability procedures is paramount to the success of this program.

Rapid Response

An early intervention service offered to businesses and workers affected by major layoffs and plant closing, Rapid Response is the first step to help workers facing a job loss. The Rapid Response Team, including representatives of local and state agencies such as the Community College, WIN Job Center, Department of Human Services and others, meet with workers to give them information of services and programs available to help them as they make the change to a new job. The team responds to WARN by official notice received by the State DWU or Non-WARN through media coverage, company contacts, local contacts, etc. Contact the local program coordinator at 662.620.5221.

Tax Credit for Training Assistance

The Mississippi Code of 1972, Section 57-73-25, as amended, provides for employer income tax credit for certain employee training programs. Workforce Development Center staff can provide a copy of this code to interested companies. However, should a company decide to pursue the usage of the tax credit, it is the responsibility of that company to maintain all documentation relative to the auditing of such credit. Qualified training programs include basic academic skills training in reading, writing and mathematics up to the twelfth grade level and retraining programs that lead toward opportunities for employee advancement. This training must be delivered through one of Mississippi’s 15 community colleges.
