MISSION STATEMENT

Itawamba Community College is committed to a campus climate that encourages respect for others with an emphasis on educational process and personal development.

The mission of the Itawamba Behavioral Intervention Team is prevention and intervention of issues relating to the safety, physical and mental health and well-being of its campus community. It is intended to be a caring, confidential program of identification, intervention and response in order to provide Itawamba Community College students with the greatest opportunity for success and the community with the greatest level of protection.

PURPOSE

  1. To support the College's policies and procedures.
  2. To receive and gather information regarding potentially harmful or disruptive behavior with regard to safety and rights of others and in order to minimize the disruption to the college community.
  3. To collaboratively recommend preventative and purposeful individualized interventions to ensure that the campus is a safe environment where learning, personal and spiritual growth and professional development can occur.
  4. Follow up to determine if further intervention is needed, evaluate effectiveness of intervention strategies and make further recommendations as needed.

PARAMETERS

  1. Actual or potential self-injurious thoughts or behaviors.
  2. Disruptive behavior that violates campus community safety (including online behaviors that are disruptive and destructive).
  3. Unusual behaviors.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What types of behavior should be referred to the BIT?
Any behavior that may be of harm to self or others as well as any change from normal or typical behavior.
 
How do I make a referral?
Referrals may be made via the College's website and the online referral form, by phone, e-mail or in person.

Will the person be informed of who made the referral?
The intention of the BIT is to maintain the highest possible level of confidentiality.

Can I refer anonymously?
Yes. Any information that you submit will be handled confidentially with the purpose of assisting the student, faculty or staff member you have named.  Or you can use Silent Witness.

Who can make a BIT referral?
Anyone can make a BIT referral. If you are concerned that a student or employee of ICC is exhibiting significant behavior changes or disruptive behavior, or is a threat to himself/herself or others, you may refer him/her to the BIT team.

What happens to the person who is being referred?
If the BIT team determines that the referred person's behavior merits intervention, the BIT team will contact the person to discuss his/her behavior and the team's recommended intervention.

Who has access to this information?
The Behavioral Intervention Team will have access to related referrals. In the event additional resources need to be utilized in order to effectively respond to a situation, reported information will be handled discretely.

How will I know the situation has been addressed?
The Behavioral Intervention Team will address every report brought to the committee. However, you may not be privy to the outcome of an investigation based on factors involved and student's privacy.
