Radiologic Technology
Admission Requirements

The following are standards for admission:

  1. Submit Online Applications (ICC and the Health Science Program applications)
  2. High School transcript or GED equivalency
  3. Orientation visit to one of the affiliated clinical practice centers
  4. Minimum composite ACT score of 18 if the required 14 semesters hours of academic courses have not been completed
  5. Fourteen semester hours with a grade of C or above in each of the following courses or the equivalent: English Composition I, Intermediate Algebra, Anatomy and Physiology I & II
  6. Transcripts from all undergraduate institutions
  7. Minimum GPA of 2.0 on all course work applicable to the current curriculum
  8. Health examination and drug screen upon acceptance into the program
  9. Meet health requirements necessary to function as a radiographer (see listing on application and Standard Functions for a Radiographer

The application deadline for fall classes each year is April 1. (Note:  Admission into program only occurs once per year, Classes begin in the fall semester). Applicants will be notified of acceptance by June 25 for admission to the fall class.

Admission to the program is highly competitive and is on a selective admission basis.  The program, which accepts 19 students each year, and had 348 applicants in 2010.  A point rating system is used to assist in the selection of students.   The system evaluates Composite ACT scores, college courses taken and the overall grade point average.  The following should assist those who wish to enter the program.

This point rating system provides program staff with a means of comparing all applicants in terms of how well each has performed on the categories listed.  Those applicants having the highest point rating are invited for interviews before the Admissions Committee.  To use this scale, identify the points awarded for your score or grade in each category.  Write the points in the blank located on the far right opposite each category.  Once the blanks are filled, add the total points.  The total becomes your point rating.

Minimum Prerequisites:

As demonstrated by the Point Rating Scale, the four most important courses are:
Anatomy and Physiology I, Anatomy and Physiology II, English Composition I, and Intermediate Algebra

The next four most important courses:
General Psychology, Public Speaking, Introduction to Computers, Elective (Fine Arts or Humanities)

Subsequent courses of importance:
Fundamentals of Radiography (Internet course only) and Medical Terminology (Internet course only)

Students are encouraged to take Fundamentals of Radiography before applying to the program and before interview selection.

Any additional general math, science and health courses provide extra points.

Examples would be First Aid, Community and Personal Health, College Algebra.

Individuals are encouraged to contact the program director for more personalized assistance.

Entrance into the Radiologic Technology program is by way of an Admission Committee which has the responsibility of screening all qualified applicants who have submitted the required records and credentials prior to the published deadline. From those persons presenting themselves for consideration, the committee selects those applicants who are deemed most likely to complete the professional program successfully and enter that chosen profession as a career. Acting upon the recommendation of the Admission Committee, ICC notifies each successful applicant.

The Admission Committee does not discriminate against anyone protected by law because of age, creed, color, national origin, race, religion, sex, disability, disabled veteran or other status.

Admission Policy

COMPOSITION

The Admission Committee will be composed of members from the program faculty and instructors, clinical instructors and/or representatives from affiliate hospitals and representatives from Itawamba Community College.

CRITERIA

The general criteria utilized in the selection process by the Admission Committee include the overall performance of the applicant; an overall GPA; ACT scores; consistency in achievement; course load and course content; extracurricular performance; motivation and goals; interview reports; the morals, character and integrity of the individual; any disciplinary or civil record that a person may have incurred; and the degree to which the applicant has become knowledgeable about the chosen profession.

The selection of successful candidates will be based upon the analysis of all relevant information for each applicant and made available to the Admission Committee. The process of applicant selection is a topic of active interest among a number of groups in our society, including the courts. Sentiments have been expressed in support of committee action beyond the consideration of scores, grades and aptitude tests, since this represents an attempt to humanize the process of selecting prospective members of the profession. The admission of any student for just cause in the competitive process and to require any selected candidate to complete additional course work.

In discharging its function, the Admission Committee is not bound by the actions of previous committees, except that no student who has been officially notified by the Program Director of his/her acceptance into the Radiologic Technology program will be refused admission unless compelling evidence of moral turpitude and unethical or compelling evidence of moral turpitude and unethical or dishonest conduct not be known to the Committee prior to acceptance is brought to the attention of the Committee. The action of the College shall be final, as to the admission or rejection of any applicant for admission as a student in the Radiologic Technology program, and no member of the Committee may commit the Committee to any action.

STANDARDS

The standards for admission of the Radiologic Technology program are established by the Admissions Committee, reviewed by the Advisory Committee of Itawamba Community College's Radiologic Technology Program, and approved by the Instructional Affairs Committee of Itawamba Community College.

The following standards were established by the Admission Committee, reviewed by the Advisory Committee in November 1981 and approved by the Instructional Affairs Committee in December 1981. Revisions were submitted by the Admissions Committee in 1984, 1990, 1992, 1995 and 2000; and approved by the Advisory Committee in the same years.

  1. Completed application for ICC admission and Health Science Program application
  2. High school transcript or GED equivalency
  3. Health examination for those accepted into the program
  4. Forty-hour orientation to the Radiology Department of a Radiologic Technology Clinical Education Center for those accepted into the program
  5. Minimum composite Enhanced ACT score of 18. ALTERNATE ELIGIBILITY: An applicant can be considered for admission to the Radiologic Technology program with Enhanced ACT score below 18, if the required fourteen (14) semester hours of academic courses have been completed with a letter grade of a C or above for each course. NOTE: A score of 18 on the Enhanced ACT Examination corresponds to a score of 15 on the ACT Examination given prior to October 1989.
  6. Fourteen (14) semester hours with a grade of C or above in each of the following courses or equivalent:
    1. Anatomy and Physiology I
    2. Anatomy and Physiology II
    3. Intermediate Algebra (a higher level of Algebra will be accepted)
    4. English Composition I

 
STEPS OF THE ADMISSION PROCESS

  1. Individual notifies the Radiologic Technology program of his/her interest in the program.
  2. Individual makes application online to Itawamba Community College and the Radiologic Technology Program.
  3. Applications are processed.
  4. Applicant forwards a copy of the ACT examination to the ICC Admission/Registrar's office or takes the ACT if not already taken.
  5. Applicant forwards high school/GED transcript(s) to the ICC Admissions/Registrar's office.
  6. Applicant forwards any undergraduate college or university transcripts to the ICC Admissions/Registrar's Office.
  7. Applicant completes the fourteen (14) semester hours of Anatomy and Physiology I, Anatomy and Physiology II, English Composition I, and Intermediate Algebra. If these courses have not been completed prior to the Admissions Committee the student must have a minimum Enhanced ACT Composite Score of 18 to appear before the Committee for an interview.
  8.  Program director selects applicants to be interviewed based upon the program's point rating system.
  9.  Selected applicants are scheduled for an interview with the Admission Committee
  10.  If the applicant is accepted:
    1.  The applicant is notified of acceptance by the program director.
    2.  The applicant responds with intent of entering the program.
    3.  If the applicant has not completed the required fourteen (14) semester hours of course work he/she must do so before beginning classes in the Fall Semester of that year.
    4.  The applicant forwards a completed Health Examination form to the program office for review by the Medical Advisor and Program Director.
    5.  The applicant must complete an orientation at one of the affiliated clinical education centers during August as will be designated by the Clinical Coordinator
    6.  The applicant begins the Radiologic Technology program in the Fall semester of that year.
  11.  If the applicant is not accepted:
    1.  The applicant is notified of program rejection by the program director.
    2.  The applicant may inquire of the program director of deficiencies which may have caused his/her unsuccessful application and possible means to correct the deficiencies.
    3.  The applicant is given guidance in applying to the Radiologic Technology program for the following year or guidance in selecting an alternate career goal.
