[] ICC finishes 7th in the state in latest match (3/9/2010)
Adam Gore/ICC Sports Information Department
FULTON, MS &45; Despite the recent cold weather, Alex Rowland and the ICC Indians golf team this week finished seventh at the Brookhaven Country Club and Wood Hollow in the third MACJC event of the season.
"We're improving," said long-time ICC golf coach Dr. David Rather. "Every tournament we've gotten better. Anytime you are wearing four or five layers of clothes it messes with you because golf is a feel game."
Rowland (Hebron Christian) finished with a final round 75 to finish tied for 13th at 151, just two strokes away from a top-ten finish. Richie Williams (MS Gulf Coast) was the medalist for the event with a four-under 138 for the two-day event.
"Going into (the last tournament) Alex was tied for third in the state. He did slip a little bit this last time, but that's not anything that he can't overcome. He is very consistent, a hard worker, and it's paying off for him," said Rather.
Montana May (Saltillo) shot 154 to finished tied for 22nd while Bobby Parks (Saltillo HS), Adrian Dyson (Carmel, FL), and Jay Henderson (Kossuth HS) all finished in the top 40 of the tournament.
"Montana had a great tournament shooting a 73 on the final day and I'm expecting big things for him," Rather said.
ICC will return to the links when they co-host the fourth MACJC event of the season with Northeast CC on Monday, March 29th at Shiloh Ridge Golf Club in Corinth and Riverbirch County Club in Amory on Tuesday, March 30th.

[] Rowland nearly wins in first event of the year (2/10/2010)
Last spring, Alex Rowland of Itawamba Community College finished two strokes away from winning the MACJC State title. In this year's first ever of the 2010 season on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the Houston native again finished two strokes out of the winner's circle.
Rowland had a 75-76 for a two-day total of 151, which was third best in the event that showcased all of the community and junior college teams. Derin Petite of Co-Lin won the tournament with a 73-76, 149 total while Grant Goforth of Northwest was second with a 72-78, 150 total.
"I thought Alex did a great job under not the best weather conditions," said ICC head coach David Rather, who is his 21st season at the helm of the ICC program. "If he continues to work hard, he has a great shot at finishing this year in Phoenix at the NJCAA National Tournament."
One of Rowland's Indian teammates, Adrian Dyson, who is a Florida native, finished tied for 22nd with a 77-87, 154. ICC's Montana May of Saltillo was 42nd with an 87-84, 171 total. Corinth's Jay Henderson was tied for 50th with a 88-86, 174 and Bobby Parks of Saltillo completed the Itawamba five-some with a 62nd place finish after his 86-98, 184 total.
As a team, Itawamba finished right in the middle of the pack in sixth place with a 325-333, 658 total. Host school, Gulf Coast, was the team champion with a 313-315, 628 total.
"I thought we did o.k. for the first event of the season," added Rather. "Five teams finished ahead of us and we were better than five other teams, although we finished just one stroke out of fifth place."

[] Rowland nearly missed winning MACJC state title (5/22/2009)
Itawamba Community College golf standout Alex Rowland had his eyes set on qualifying for the NJCAA National Tournament in Scottsboro, Ala. But the freshman from Houston High School, who was coming off an impressive third place overall finish at the MACJC State Championship in Holly Springs, knew it wouldn't be easy to qualify for the week-long event beginning that began on May 20. "I was pretty happy with the way I played at the state championships, especially considering the near freezing conditions," said Rowland, who in the final tournament leading up to the MACJC State Championship, led after the first round with a 69 and finished fourth among 60 golfers at the Ridge Golf Club in Corinth. "I basically had just two bad holes and if not for those, who knows, I might have come away with a state title." ICC head coach David Rather knew in the fall that Rowland, who finished two strokes out of the winner's circle at state, could be his guy to continue the program's current streak of Indians qualifying for the National Tournament. "Alex had been our number one all year," said Rather. "He did get out of the blocks a little slower than we expected this spring but he has really finished strong and I'm proud of the way he battled it at Kirkwood National." Rather also pointed out that Rowland has had a trio of top five finishes this spring. Unfortunately after a tremendous opening round at the two day Region 23 Tournament hosted by East Mississippi Community College at the Mississippi State golf course, the Chickasaw County native struggled in the second round and fell short of qualifying for the national event.
