Assistant Coach Brian Alexander

Brian Alexander, a 15 season college coaching veteran, enters his third year as assistant men and women’s basketball coach at Itawamba Community College and his 17th season overall. In only two years at ICC, Alexander’s recruiting and coaching efforts have had a tremendous impact. This impact is evident in the programs two-year success of 92 wins, seven championships, six post-season appearances, 12 new school records, 15 post season player selections, 15 student athletes to sign with four-year universities, and five coach of the year awards.

Alexander has made history within the MACJC basketball league on two different occasions. Alexander is the only coach in the history of the MACJC to win two state championships in the same year (ICC 2008). He is also the only men’s coach in MACJC history to take two different basketball programs to the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas (Northeast & ICC). Success has followed Alexander at every stop and it has been recognized on the national level. While on staff, Alexander has played a major role in five of his six head coaches being named Coach of the Year in their respective collegiate conferences. The trend continued last year as both Marty Cooper and Nanci Gray of ICC were named the 2008 MACJC Coach of the Year.

Alexander came to Itawamba after serving eight years as a NCAA Division I assistant coach at Campbell, Southeastern Louisiana, and Southern Mississippi. He has coached in three NCAA Division I conferences including the Atlantic Sun, Southland, & Conference USA. Overall, Alexander has won twelve division, conference, or regional championships including Southern Mississippi’s first and only Conference USA Championship in 2001.

Itawamba’s basketball season of 2007-2008 was the finest in school history as the Lady Indians and Indians won the MACJC North Division Championships and MACJC State Championships in the same season for the first time in school history. The men’s state title was the first since 1962 and the women’s first since 1975. The Indians went on to win the 2008 NJCAA Region XXIII championship for the second consecutive year. The Indians were led by JUCO All-American Anthony Brock who signed to play at the University of Alabama. The Indians finished the season ranked No. 5 in the final NJCAA National Poll breaking the school record of No. 14 set by the 2006-2007 Indians.

Alexander earned the Associate in Arts degree from Northeast Mississippi Community College in 1996 and his Bachelor of Science degree from Mississippi State University in 1998. He is also a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi where he earned his Master of Science degree in 1999 and his Specialist in Education degree in 2001. Alexander holds membership in organizations such as the Mississippi Association of Coaches, the NJCAA Basketball Coaches Association, and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Alexander and his wife Cassie have a three-year-old daughter, Kinsley and one year-old son, Colson.
