Respiratory Therapy is a general term used to describe
a Respiratory Therapist who work under physician direction to fill a vital role in
our nation's health care delivery system.
Respiratory Therapist (RT) are involved in the delivery of life-saving and life-supporting care to persons suffering from heart and lung disorders. RTs are responsible for initiating cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the setup and monitoring of all life support systems. In addition to life support measures, RTs provide treatment for various heart and lung disorders by administering inhalation treatments, oxygen, and drugs.
Members of this dynamic profession also perform diagnostic tests that aid the physician in determining the presence and extent of cardiopulmonary disease. RTs conduct pulmonary function studies; draw and analyze blood samples; perform electrocardiograms (ECGs), exercise stress tests and sleep studies. RTs practice in hospitals, clinics, home care settings and hold management and education positions.
