PROGRAM OVERVIEW

THE PROGRAM

The first year of coursework involves academics. The Surgical Technology program courses equal one year (three semesters). Upon successful completion of all required academic and Surgical Technology program courses, graduates will receive an Associate of Applied Science degree and are eligible to take the national credentialing exam to become a Certified Surgical Technologist. The goal of the Surgical Technology program is to prepare entry-level Surgical Technologists who are competent in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills) and affective (behavior) learning domains to enter the profession. This program requires prerequisite courses and a minimum ACT score of 16. The prerequisites are located under the Program Admission Information and Procedures document below under the resources tab.

THE PROFESSION

Surgical Technologists are allied health professionals who are an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients in a variety of settings. The Surgical Technologist works under medical supervision to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. This individual works under the supervision of a surgeon to ensure that the operating room or environment is safe, that equipment functions properly and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. A Surgical Technologist possesses expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

The median annual wage for Surgical Technologists is $47,110.

THE FUTURE

The U.S. Bureau of Labor projects 7,900 openings annually for 2024-2030 with emploment projected to grow 6%.
