Advanced Placement Options

ADVANCED PLACEMENT ADN BRIDGE PROGRAMS

The Associate Degree Nursing program provides an opportunity for currently Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) to obtain advanced standing. There are two options. If an applicant has been unsuccessful in any nursing program since becoming an LPN, the applicant is not eligible for an advanced placement option. These applicants should reference the readmission policy for admission criteria.

OPTION 1

Option 1 affords licensed LPNs the opportunity to receive credit for first-semester nursing courses. The LPN’s knowledge and skills are validated by an examination, including both challenge and skills competency. After successful challenge, the LPN can join other Associate Degree Nursing students in second-semester nursing courses. Advanced placement applicants must meet the same admission criteria as traditional Associate Degree Nursing applicants.

Challenge Examination

  • Submit online application to the College and the nursing program and be accepted to be eligible to sit for the challenge examination.
  • To be eligible to sit for the challenge examination, the candidate requesting to challenge must have an active, unencumbered LPN license and maintain throughout the entire program.
  • The candidate must pass the challenge examination with a score of 75 or above.
  • The challenge examination may be taken only once.
  • The challenge examination, which will include content from NUR 1119 – Fundamentals of Nursing and NUR 1111 – Dosage and Pharmacology I, will be administered in July in the Health Science Education Center on the Tupelo Campus.

Skills competency will be demonstrated in the nursing skills laboratory at an assigned time prior to attending a clinical rotation. Skills are validated after admission to the program.

OPTION 2

Option 2 allows LPNs who have worked at least one year in the past two years to take a transition course and join the RN students in the last year of the program (two semesters). This option requires LPN students who have been accepted into the program to complete a five-credit hour LPN-RN transition course during the summer term just prior to the start of the fall semester. After successful completion of the transition course, the LPN is given validation credit for NUR 1119, NUR 1111, NUR 1129 and NUR 1121 for prior knowledge gained from LPN program and work experience.

*LPN-RN Option 2 requires all prerequisite and general education courses to be completed as well as one year of work experience prior to admission. Work experience should be verified by employer on official letterhead.
