PROGRAM OVERVIEW

THE PROGRAM

Diagnostic Medical Sonography is a one-year (three-semester) program in general sonography.  Graduates will receive an Associate of Applied Science degree and will be eligible to take the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography examinations, including Principles and Instrumentation, to become a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer in Abdominal and Obstetrics/Gynecology.  The DMS program will consist of an in-person boot camp/lab session at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters, clinical rotations and hybrid didactic courses.  For students who reside outside the geographical area of ICC, clinical sites must be approved. The program accepts one class each year beginning in the fall. This program requires prerequisite courses and a minimum ACT score of 18. THE PROFESSION

Diagnostic Medical Sonographers are highly skilled healthcare professionals who use high frequency sound waves, also known as an ultrasound, to produce diagnostic images of the internal structures of the human body.  Sonography is a multi-specialty profession comprised of general, cardiac and vascular along with many subspecialties including musculoskeletal, abdominal and obstetrics and gynecology. Sonographers work closely with physicians and radiologists, who interpret the ultrasound and related diagnostic procedures. They are responsible for producing quality diagnostic images to ensure accurate diagnosis of disease along with normal routine examinations. Diagnostic Medical Sonographers use professional and ethical judgment and critical thinking skills to perform diagnostic sonographic procedures.  Sonographers work in hospitals, clinics, physician’s offices, women’s health centers and pediatric care centers.          

THE PAY

The median annual wage for a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is $68,150.

THE FUTURE

The U.S Bureau of Labor projects 15,200 openings annually for 2024-2030 with employment projected to grow 11%.
