BancorpSouth supports ICC's high school equivalency program

BancorpSouth Bank (NYSE: BXS) is committed to its communities.

The bank recently donated $3,000 to Itawamba Community College’s high school equivalency program.

The adult education/basic skills program, formerly known as the GED program, enables students—ages 16 and older—to complete a high school equivalency diploma through classes offered in the college’s five-county district, which includes Chickasaw, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe and Pontotoc counties.

“We are grateful for this significant donation from BancorpSouth,” said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen. “None of the work we do would be possible without the generous support of individuals and companies, like BancorpSouth, that believe in the mission of Itawamba Community College and our communities as a whole.”

ICC received the donation from BancorpSouth on Aug. 20, when Allen was invited to speak to community leaders about the college’s work with students enrolled in the adult education/basic skills program. Last year, ICC served more than 800 individuals, including 30 in Itawamba County, through the program.

“ICC is providing students with a second chance at receiving a high school equivalency diploma and is helping them reach their full potential,” said BancorpSouth President - Northeast Mississippi Division and ICC alumnus Mark Burleson. “We’re proud to support the tremendous efforts that the college is making.”

As part of the adult education/basic skills program, ICC also offers English as a Second Language classes to help non-native English speakers build and improve their reading, speaking, listening and writing skills, as well as United States citizenship skills, which may be included.

Current adult education scholarship opportunities include Mi-Best and 2nd Chance Mississippi, Allen said. “Mi-Best is an innovative training program dedicated to preparing individuals who need help with foundational skills for careers by mixing career training with additional support for math, writing and reading inside the classroom. ICC offers Mi-Best pathway opportunities in certified nursing assistant, welding and cutting technology and heating, ventilation and air conditioning technology. A local organization, 2nd Chance Mississippi is dedicated to raising funds and awareness for adult education and work skills training. It is currently sponsoring an opportunity for raising funds and awareness for adult education and work skills training.”
