13 August Free COVID vaccine clinics set for all three ICC locations next week August 13, 2021 By Thomas, Donna S. General 0 Free COVID-19 vaccine will be available at all Itawamba Community College locations next week for employees, students, their families and the entire community. Dates and times include Aug. 16 and 17 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in the David C. Cole Student Services Building banquet room 1 at the Fulton Campus and the first floor conference room of the Academic and Student Center at the Tupelo Campus; and Aug. 18 from 9 a.m.-noon at the Belden Conference Center lobby. “As a community college, one of our core principles is open access, and helping to make vaccine available with the hope of slowing the spread of this virus allows us to continue to live our mission,” said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen. This will be the second opportunity for ICC’s faculty and staff to take advantage of an on campus clinic. To date, roughly 70 percent of employees are vaccinated. The free vaccinations are made available through a partnership with Access Family Health Services, Inc. “Access Family Health Services has provided almost 8,000 vaccines with most being given at community vaccine events – our largest event was around 200 vaccines, and others have been less than 10, said Marilyn Sumerford, executive director. “Most of us target our resources where they bring the most value. We believe vaccines are the best weapon that we have against the highly contagious Delta variant of COVID-19. A vaccine does not guarantee that you won’t get sick, but it certainly improves the chance of not being hospitalized or die. COVID-19 is no longer a disease of the elderly. Students enroll in college to have a better life. That life should not be cut short by a disease that could possibly be prevented by a vaccine.” No appointment is necessary. ICC sets three-day weekend opportunity this fall This fall, Itawamba Community College will transition to a four-day instructional schedule for the majority of classes, offering a three-day weekend opportunity as an option to all students. There will be no change in office hours, cafeteria services, residence hall operation or provision of any services to students or the community. Practice for athletic teams and performance arts groups will not be affected. The flexible scheduling option will add another dimension to our traditional, online, accelerated and hybrid course offerings, said Dr. Jay Allen, President. “It is a significant option because we believe that it will enable the College to offer all students an opportunity to take advantage of more compact scheduling to fit within their work hours and to suit their busy lifestyles.” Faculty and staff will continue to maintain their regular five-day work schedules, and all services will continue to be offered Monday through Friday during normal hours of operation from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. “We believe that this is a positive step for Itawamba Community College,” Allen said. “I ... ICC's nursing students celebrate week, month and graduation When the pages of the calendar turned to May, a special celebration began for nurses across the nation. Every year, from May 6-12, those in the profession are recognized for their service and dedication to caring for others and improving the health of patients through National Nurses Week. But as special as nurses are and most deserving of a celebration, the week is just a small part of the larger National Nurses Month, which will be observed through May 31. “Students who are enrolled in Itawamba Community College’s Associate Degree Nursing program prepare to take the NCLEX-RN and subsequently to become Registered Nurses, who work in collaboration with physicians and other members of a healthcare team,” said Tonya Vaughn, dean of Health Science Instruction. “They fill numerous roles, including but not limited to, disease prevention, coping with illness, patient assessments, health educators and advocacy. However, they don’t stop there. There is also possible case management, quality assurance procedures, directing complex nursing care systems and conducting clinical research. They work in hospitals, physicians’ offices, home healthcare services and nursing care ... ICC to celebrate Adult Education, Family Literacy Week, Sept. 19-25 Itawamba Community College will join educational institutions throughout the United States in celebration of National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, Sept. 19-25. “The goal of National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week is to work side-by-side in every state, territory and district to heighten public awareness, strengthen alliances, leverage resources and increase the number of people who understand the vital role adult education and family literacy play in our nation’s well-being,” said Linzy Patterson, director of adult education at ICC. According to ProLiteracy, more than 43 million adults in the United States cannot read, write or do basic math above a third grade level. Patterson said that U.S. adult literacy statistics show that bringing all adults to the equivalent of a sixth-grade reading level would generate an additional $2.2 trillion in annual income for the country. Also, he noted that it is estimated between $100-$238 billion in healthcare costs a year are linked to low adult literacy skills. Regarding family literacy, “A mother’s reading skill is the greatest determinant of her children’s ...
