• Early Childhood Academy April activities

               Itawamba Community College’s Early Childhood Academy has scheduled several events for April.             An Early Childhood Academy Vision Board Workshop will be Apr. 2 from 6-8 p.m. in room 608 of the Belden Center and Apr. 5 from 6-8 p.m. in room 126 of the Student Support Center at the Tupelo Campus. The two-hour workshop will explain how to reach goals by creating a vision board, which is a collection of pictures, phrases and art outlining goals for the year.             Scheduled for the Week of the Young Child are the following events:             Apr. 16, 1-2 p.m. – Music Monday – Sing, Dance, Celebrate and Learn activities including Brain Boogie Busters, Zumba for Kids Song and Dance Activity and Nursery Rhymes;             Apr. 17, 1-2 p.m. – Tasty Tuesday – Healthy Eating and Fitness at Home and School,  including apple, fruit, donuts activity; food group sorting from the My Plate website and Green Salad craft;             Apr. 18, 1-2 p.m. – Work Together Wednesday – Work Together, Build Together, Learn Together – floating structures and gumdrop bridge;             Apr. 19, 1-2 p.m. – ...
• ICC opens Early Childhood Academy

  Itawamba Community College is offering a new service to area parents and daycare providers through the Early Childhood Academy.             The service provides professional development training to daycare/preschool teachers as well as parenting classes and a large library of educational materials available for free use by those from Chickasaw, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe and Pontotoc counties.             The Early Childhood Academy is a collaboration of ICC, the Mississippi Community College Board, the Mississippi Department of Human Services and child care providers to ensure that Mississippi’s family-based unified and integrated early childhood system connects and integrates resources and services for both parents/caregivers and their children.             ICC’s Resource and Referral Center is located in the Student Support Center at the Tupelo Campus at 2176 South Eason Blvd. Hours are Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Professional development is scheduled on selected Tuesdays and Thursdays (from 6-8 p.m.) and  Saturdays (9 a.m.-noon). • World Day of the Child should be celebrated EVERY day...because they are 'our future'

             The calendar pages are turning rapidly. Excitement and anticipation fill our days, hours and minutes…and most importantly, the sights and sounds of children, eagerly awaiting Christmas Eve, the most magical time of the year.             Children…we must celebrate them every day, because, you see, they are our future. They need love, nurturing and attention, all of which are free. Sometimes it’s good to remember what it’s like to be a child…and seeing the world through their eyes.             As the world rushes to prepare for the holidays, specifically Christmas, with making lists and checking them twice, it wouldn’t be a bad idea for us to stop for just a few minutes and reflect on those days when we were eagerly awaiting the arrival of Santa…an early bedtime, but little sleep as any sound could have been his reindeer.             Christmas and every other day should be the “day of the child” just as the commemoration this week as “World Day of the Child.”             There are many ways that we can celebrate with children every day and in ...
• ICC, The W sign memorandum of understanding to provide opportunities for Early Childhood Education majors

  Itawamba Community College and Mississippi University for Women signed a memorandum of understanding today (July 14) to provide educational opportunities for students pursuing careers in early childhood education. The agreement establishes a pathway for ICC students who are earning an associate’s degree in Early Childhood Technology to have the opportunity to complete a bachelor’s degree at The W. According to the agreement, ICC  and The W will work together to enroll students  in the Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Development program, including advising and encouraging students, alumni and constituents who qualify. • ICC to celebrate Adult Education, Family Literacy Week, Sept. 19-25

             Itawamba Community College will join educational institutions throughout the United States in celebration of National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, Sept. 19-25.             “The goal of National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week is to work side-by-side in every state, territory and district to heighten public awareness, strengthen alliances, leverage resources and increase the number of people who understand the vital role adult education and family literacy play in our nation’s well-being,” said Linzy Patterson, director of adult education at ICC.             According to ProLiteracy, more than 43 million adults in the United States cannot read, write or do basic math above a third grade level.             Patterson said that U.S. adult literacy statistics show that bringing all adults to the equivalent of a sixth-grade reading level would generate an additional $2.2 trillion in annual income for the country. Also, he noted that it is estimated between $100-$238 billion in healthcare costs a year are linked to low adult literacy skills. • ICC to celebrate Week of the Arts, formally reopen W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center

  Itawamba Community College will celebrate the Week of the Arts, Apr. 19-22, with several special events at the Fulton Campus, including a ribbon cutting and formal reopening of the newly-renovated W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium.             They first event will be a CenterStage concert, Apr. 19 at 7 p.m. at the Band Hall. The remaining activities, which will be at the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium, are the ribbon cutting and open house, Apr. 20, 10 a.m.-noon; Fashion Show, Apr. 20, 6 p.m.; Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble concert, Apr. 21, 6:30 p.m.; and Choir and Chamber Choir concert, Apr. 22, 7 p.m.                   Renovations began in the fall of 2021 to restore the decades-old 24,000-square-foot facility, which had not received any major renovations since it was built in 1978. With upgrades to almost every inch of the facility, the state-of-the-art auditorium, lecture space, exhibit hall and lobby now boast modern designs that will be more inviting to all guests. The renovations were designed by McCarty Architects.             The public is invited to all events.
