General 0 Registration is underway at the Itawamba Community College Belden Center for an upcoming Classroom Management and Safety course. The in-person class provides crucial insights into creating a safe and secure learning environment, and participants will gain practical skills that correlate to promoting a safe atmosphere conducive to learning. The sessions are taught by local law enforcement officers. Participants can choose from sessions that are offered July 9 or 11 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. The cost is $30, which includes one CEU. The class will meet Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. through November 10. Highlights of the hands-on course include both ServSafe® Food Manager and Alcohol Certification, menu planning/preparation, assistance/participation in execution of catered events, résumé/interview skills and both front- and back-of-the-house operations. ICC's Brown returns to the classroom this fall from nine-month deployment to Kuwait Service is an important word to Itawamba Community College instructor Ashley Brown of Blue Springs. Fresh off a nine-month deployment to Kuwait, Brown has returned to the classroom this fall as an industrial maintenance, robotics and electrical technology instructor at the Belden Center. He is now in a different kind of service. He is responsible for recruiting students; building and maintaining the curriculum; ensuring students achieve the skills necessary to be functional, entry-level employees in related career fields; maintaining relationships with industry and prospective employers and linking them. That’s a long way from what Major Brown was doing in western Asia, where he was the logistic officer for a rotary aviation maintenance unit. Brown has been in the military for more than 17 years, beginning as an enlisted private. He has served as an armor crewman in an M1A1 Abrams tank, a calvary scout, completed a 12-month deployment to Iraq and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. ICC partners with USM for 2+2 program for construction management degree Itawamba Community College has entered into a partnership with the University of Southern Mississippi for a 2 + 2 program to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in construction management. ICC’s Construction Management Technology is an instructional program designed to prepare technicians for employment within the construction industries and firms in mid-level management operations as estimators, planners, project managers, layout specialists or other construction opportunities. Upon completion of the two-year curriculum, students are awarded the Associate of Applied Science degree. According to Scott Emison, instructor and director of ICC’s Construction Management Technology program, the program allows his students to transfer to the University of Southern Mississippi to complete degree work in two years. “This collaboration is a new and a slightly more direct route for ICC’s students to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in construction management at Southern Miss,” Emison said. “This 2 + 2 option allows our ICC students the opportunity to fully transfer credit of 60 hours and to seamlessly enter the third-year cohort with the rest of the USM-BCM track students. The four semesters ... Hospitality Management Itawamba Community College is offering a new online program in Hospitality Management. The program provides specialized occupational instruction in all phases of hotel and restaurant management to prepare students for careers as managers and supervisors in the hotel and restaurant industry, according to Billy Carson, director. In discussing ICC’s program, Carson quoted one of Tupelo’s top restaurant owners, “We see this as a win-win for our region. Potential students can receive the training that we need for employment, and our current staff can work toward a better position. The fact that this program is online is key because many potential hospitality students have 24/7 jobs and need 24/7 access to the courses.” Students can earn a 30-hour Career Certificate, a 45-hour Technical Certificate or a 60-hour Associate of Applied Science degree. ICC Travel Tribe schedules Italy study abroad tour in May Itawamba Community College’s Travel Tribe will embark on a mini-study abroad tour of Italy next May, and a limited number of spots are available. The eight-day tour (May 18-25) includes Rome and Florence. Highlights are Vatican City, Roman Forum and Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon and Spanish Steps in Rome and Piazza della Signoria, Ponte Vecchio, Basilica of Santa Croce, Gates of Paradise and Accademia in Florence. In late summer, cosponsor Jessi Stevenson joined college travel representatives from across the United States in Paris, France for a five-day training session. The Orientation and Development Seminar with EF Tours will enable Stevenson and cosponsor Dr. Edana Nail and Dean Chris Stevenson to better lead educational and travel initiatives, such as the upcoming tour of Italy. Stevenson said that EF led training seminars each morning and daily walking tours of the city each afternoon.
