ICC science faculty participate in UAB GATE program

Three members of Itawamba Community College’s Natural Science Division faculty participated in the University of Alabama at Birmingham GATE program recently.

            They included Beth Campbell of Fulton, Michelle Milner of Saltillo and Lindsey Patterson of Amory.

            Campbell earned both the bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Mississippi State University and has completed additional coursework. She has served as biology instructor at ICC since 1999, and her previous employment has included graduate assistant and research assistant staff at MSU, substitute teacher and private biology tutor. She is a member of the National Science Teachers Association and Faculty Teachers Association and holds certifications from the Globe Program and Project Learning Tree. She has an extensive list of awards including ICC’s Meritorious Achievement, National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) and Lamplighter Award. She is a member of Trinity Baptist Church where she teaches the College and Career Sunday School class, Kid’s Time and Vacation Bible School and serves as a nursery volunteer. She and her husband, Jason, who is also on the ICC faculty and sponsor for the Bass Fishing team, have one son, Hayden, a sophomore at IAHS.

            Milner is a native of McCarley. She received her education at Marshall Elementary and J.Z. George Middle/High School in Carroll County. Her educational background also includes Mississippi Valley State University, the bachelor’s degree from Delta State University and the master’s degree at the University of Mississippi. She is currently enrolled in the doctoral program in Urban Higher Education and Policy Development at Jackson State University. Prior to joining the ICC faculty, Milner taught middle and high school in Carroll County, Shelby County, Tenn., Lee County and the Oxford City school district. Among the subjects were environmental science, biology, chemistry, principles of biology and human anatomy and physiology. She has two sons, Micah James and Micaiah Jabarie.

            Patterson is beginning her third year at ICC, where she teaches anatomy and physiology I and II. She earned the associate’s degree from ICC, bachelor’s degree from the University of Mississippi and the master’s degree from the University of West Alabama. She is a member of the children’s committee at the Amory First United Methodist Church. She and her husband, Linzy, who is an adult education instructor at Itawamba Community College, are the parents of Collins, 6, and Harper, 3.

            The Gross Anatomy of the Thorax and Abdomen course, which was designed for collegiate anatomy educators, included lectures and complete dissection of the thorax and abdomen as well as emphasis on educational strategies.
