11 November Area high school emerging scholars honored at ICC event November 11, 2024 By Thomas, Donna S. General 0 Emerging Scholars who attended a special luncheon in their honor, Nov. 7, not only learned about the opportunities available, but also heard it from Itawamba Community College alumnus and Plantersville native Chloe Evans, who is a graduate of Nettleton High School. “When I first walked through the doors of this campus (Fulton) in 2020, I never imagined the profound impact it would have on my life,” she said. “My first interview, headshot, research project and all-nighter happened here during my time at ICC. This college was my beginning, and I’m here today to reflect on the journey and to highlight how the accelerated academic and leadership opportunities at ICC have shaped not just my education, but also my future.” She was involved with nine student organizations, held leadership positions within five and completed more than 100 service hours, all while maintaining an almost perfect GPA. “This was possible because of the culture at ICC, Evans said. “I was able to pursue leadership opportunities and be heavily involved because of the incredible support system that I found here. Faculty, staff and students are a family wanting the best for each other and supporting one another. ICC isn’t just a place to earn a degree – it’s a place to discover who you truly are. The instructors go above and beyond to engage with students on a personal level.” Evans noted that the leadership skills and academic discipline that she gained through Phi Theta Kappa and Honors College prepared her for transferring to Mississippi State University, where she graduated this year. In May, she became admissions coordinator at MSU’s College of Forest Resources. “As I look back on my time at Itawamba Community College, Evans said, “I’m filled with gratitude for the opportunities I was given. I realize that my time here didn’t just prepare me for academic challenges; it prepared me for life itself.” She encouraged participants to embrace a growth mindset, set clear goals and lean into the challenges. “These lessons go beyond the classroom – they shape the way I approach every challenge I face. I encourage you to embrace every opportunity this college has to offer. Your journey after high school is just the beginning. The skills you develop now will serve you for the rest of your life.” Those invited to the event, which was an opportunity to learn more about the academic and involvement opportunities for honor students at ICC, were area high school seniors with a 24+ ACT score. High schools with representatives included Alcorn Central, Baldwyn, Caledonia, Eupora, Hamilton, Hatley, Houlka, Houston, Itawamba, Louisville, Mantachie, Mooreville, Nettleton, Oxford, Pontotoc, Saltillo, South Pontotoc, Tupelo, Vardaman and homeschool.
