Career Center, General 0 Registration is underway for several continuing education classes that will begin soon at Itawamba Community College. They include Introduction to Single Board Microcomputers and Microcontrollers, Digital Photography for Beginners, Microsoft Excel for Beginners, Personal Finance and Art – A Basic Approach to Watercolor and Certified Nursing Assistant. Introduction to Single Board Microcomputers and Microcontrollers will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9 p.m. from Sept. 10-19. It provides students with basic knowledge and basic concepts of single board computers and controllers. The class is intended for individuals possessing a basic understanding of computers and electricity, targeting both STEM educators and hobbyists. Topics covered include Single Board Computers, Introduction to the Raspberry Pi SBC, Introduction to the Arduino SBC and Basic Setup and Programming with Arduino IDE software. The fee is $100, which includes the Arduino book. Digital Photography for Beginners is designed for those who have a new SLR camera or want to increase their skill with a camera they already have. Highlights include setting up your camera, focal points, composition, cropping, f stops, shutter speeds, ISO, white balance, all the modes and their purpose and why they should be used. The class, which is taught on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9 p.m., meets from September 23-October 24. Cost is $100. Microsoft Excel for Beginners focuses on designing, creating and editing spreadsheets and basic charts, insertion of formulas, designation of ranges and sorting data. Those who deal with figures and charts can use this is a tool that will lessen and simplify workloads. Basic computer skills are required. The class meets from September 23-October 10 (Tuesdays and Thursdays) from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Cost is $85. Personal Finance uses curriculum created by Dave Ramsey, and it is designed to provide students with practical insights, strategies and principles to take control of their finances and build a solid foundation for a secure future. The course explores key topics such as budgeting, savings, debt management, retirement and saving plans and real estate. Whether individuals are facing debt challenges, planning for major life milestones or aiming for early retirement, the course provides tailored guidance to help students achieve their financial goals. Cost is $85 per individual or $125 per couple. The class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from September 23-October 31, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Art – A Basic Approach to Watercolor is a beginner’s approach to brush painting on canvas (and watercolor). Students are guided through media experimentation using watercolor, acrylic and mixed-media (all water-based painting media/no oil paints). In addition, students will learn different bush and beginning techniques. The instructor works with each student as needed to achieve personal and course goals. Planned painting projects include experimental color and brush mark charts, simple landscape with sunset sky and one or more still-life paintings. A supply list will be provided in addition to the $65 course fee. It meets on Thursdays from October 3-24 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Upon successful completion of the 12-week program, Certified Nursing Assistant participants can take the exam to become a CNA. Nursing assistants may find employment with nursing homes, medical centers, home healthcare providers and clinics. Becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant provides an excellent foundation for those who want to advance in the nursing profession. They include Autoimmune Nutrition, Oct. 12; and Beginning Cake Decorating and Basic Computer Skills, both Oct. 16. Autoimmune Nutrition, which meets Thursday nights for six weeks from 6-7:30 p.m., includes tailoring the diet to manage an overactive immune system, the definition of autoimmune disorder, dealing with increased sugar consumption and foods that heal. They include Grant Writing (Part 2), EMT-Basic, Forklift and CPR (Heartsaver®). Grant Writing (Part 2), which meets May 31 and June 7 from 8 a.m.-noon, builds on the foundational skills taught in Grant Writing and dives deeper into advanced techniques for writing compelling and competitive grant proposals. Participants will learn how to craft persuasive narratives, strengthen the case for funding and address complex requirements set by various funding organizations. By the end of the class, students will be better equipped to write high-quality, successful grant applications. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is an instructional course that prepares individuals to function in the prehospital environment. The EMT course provides instruction in basic life support care of sick and injured persons. Participants in the program intern with an ambulance service providing advanced life support services for the community. They include Residential Wiring, Small Engine Repair Technician and Introduction to Welding and Cutting. Residential Wiring meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9 p.m., Feb. 7-Mar. 9. In the hands-on class, participants will learn how to use a meter properly; change and update receptacles; distinguish between different types of switches; switch replacement; locate loose or bad connections; and troubleshooting techniques. It is designed for those who are interested in becoming an electrician’s assistant or want to learn to do very basic electrical wiring for their own use. Small Engine Repair Technician meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9 p.m., Feb. 7-Apr. 6. Upon successful completion of the 16-session program, students will be prepared for an entry-level technician position at an existing small engine repair shop or to open their own related business.
