General 0 Itawamba Community College has an answer for those who are retired and looking for something fun to do. Its innovative Senior College will begin Jan. 16 at 9 a.m. with Jack Reed Jr. hosting the kickoff. He will share excerpts from his recently released book, “A Time to Listen,” which includes the best of thoughts collected from theologians, ministers, teachers and inspirational role models and have become the building blocks of the architecture of his own theology and philosophy. “With ICC’s new Senior College, we wanted to offer something that will appeal to the diverse interests of people living in retirement,” said Josh Gammill, director of Continuing Education. “The sessions will offer wonderful opportunities for community members to learn more about topics specific to our area, stay active in the community and engage with other participants who share the same enthusiasm and zest for life and learning as they do.” Additional programs include Feb. 20, Chair Yoga; Mar. 20, Clark Richey with the Claude Gentry Theatre in Baldwyn and lunch at Tom’s Soda Shop (transportation provided); Apr. 17, Legal Matters covering wills, trusts, and long-term care with Sarah Cline Stevens; and May 15, Spring Fling. Sessions will meet at the ICC Belden Center (3200 Adams Farm Rd.) from 9-11 a.m. Cost is $30 per person or $50 per couple per semester. The first session is free. Related Articles ICC's fall Senior College session to kick off Aug. 21 at Belden Center Itawamba Community College’s fall session of Senior College will kick off Aug. 21 with a performance by Elvis Presley impersonator Jack Curtis of Tupelo and a celebration of Senior Citizens Day. Curtis has donned the flashy white jumpsuit, reminiscent of the King of Rock and Roll, to entertain fans at various events. His renditions of Elvis classics like “Love Me Tender” have left a lasting impression on those lucky enough to witness his act. Curtis has been an Elvis Tribute Artist for more than 30 years. He won first place three consecutive years in the “Images of Elvis” regionals and finished in the top five in the finals in Memphis, Tenn. Curtis also performed with a live band and backup singers in the first Tupelo Elvis Festival in 1999. Among the schools, Itawamba Community College was selected from a competitive pool of applicants to receive $100,000 to transform the futures of students in the community. “It is a tremendous honor for Itawamba Community College to be selected as one of the recipients of the prestigious All Within My Hands grant, which will significantly impact our career education programs, providing funding for students to pursue a pathway and their best start,” said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen. “It is another indication of the success of the College and reinforcement of the mission that students and their success are our top priority.” The Metallica Scholars Initiative (MSI) was launched in 2019 by Metallica’s foundation, All Within My Hands (AWMH), in partnership with the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). They include Food Management Certification, Jan. 13-Feb. 7, Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m.; Certified Nursing Assistant, Jan. 13-Mar. 26, Mondays and Wednesdays, 5-9 p.m.; Medical Administrative Assistant, Jan 13-Apr. 9, Mondays, 5-9 p.m. plus additional online assignments; Medical Assistant, Jan. 13-May 8, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 6-9 p.m.; Business Office Specialist, Jan. 14-May 8, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5-9 p.m.; and EMT Basic, Jan. 14-May 8, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5-10 p.m. Food Management Certification includes the essential skills needed to thrive in the restaurant and hospitality industry. Students will experience training opportunities including ServSafe® Food Manager and Alcohol Certification, menu planning preparation, assist/participate in execution of catered events, résumé/interview skills and front- and back-of-the-house operations.
