Career Center, General 0 Jordan Allen of Jackson, recent graduate of Itawamba Community College, has been selected as a candidate for the Promoting Recruitment Opportunities in Medicine with Individual Study Experience (PROMISE). The early assurance program for economically/educationally disadvantaged students with a commitment to pursuing a career as a physician is sponsored and managed by the School of Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. At ICC, Allen was a member of the women’s soccer team, STEM Club, Trading Post, Phi Theta Kappa and Honors College, Instructional Support Leader and Chemistry II tutor for NASA (Mississippi Space Grant Consortium) as well as 2023 Orientation Leader. Her other activities include assistance in the nursery and singing in the choir at New Jerusalem Church in Jackson. She will continue her education at Mississippi College where she plans to major in biology/pre-medicine with a minor in communication. She is the daughter of Althea Allen. “We are excited to welcome Jordan to the PROMISE program this summer,” said Dr. Dan Coleman, director of Outreach at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. “This program will offer her a unique opportunity to explore diverse areas of medicine and gain insight into the life of a medical student. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the ICC faculty and leadership for their outstanding support in helping her build a solid foundation in her core classes.” Among the major goals of the PROMISE program are introduction to career opportunities in medicine; engagement in enrichment programs that help strengthen individual academic foundation; integration with faculty who are active in medicine, encouragement in pursuing a career as a physician; and guidance through the processes and preparation required to apply to and attend medical school, including preparation for the Medical College Admission Test. Students who complete the PROMISE program and meet the metrics established by the admissions executive committee of the UMMC School of Medicine will be eligible for a position there. Eligibility also depends upon completion of all undergraduate degree requirements and the PROMISE program requirements. Related Articles ICC signs preferred candidate program agreement with MHP; only community college in the state selected Itawamba Community College signed a Memorandum of Understanding for a Preferred Candidate Program with the Mississippi Highway Patrol, Jan. 26, at the Tupelo Campus. The initiative is a pilot program that will be implemented at ICC, the only community college in the state selected. “Itawamba Community College is more than excited about this partnership with the Mississippi Highway Patrol,” said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen. “According to research, having successfully completed a college degree substantially improves the knowledge and abilities of officers on a vast range of areas from the criminal justice system to conceptual and managerial skills.” The agreement will allow those who are enrolled to pursue either an A.A. or A.A.S. degree in ICC’s Criminal Justice program, meet with an MHP recruiter and apply for the MHP Preferred Candidate Program to skip weeks of the Mississippi Highway Patrol Academy. Markham, Rinehart selected as prestigious Leaders of Promise Scholars Itawamba Community College sophomores Abby Rinehart of Saltillo and Kaylee Markham of Golden are among 207 Phi Theta Kappa members selected as 2020 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholars and will each receive a $1,000 scholarship. The Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship Program helps Phi Theta Kappa members defray educational expenses while enrolled in associate degree programs. Scholars are encouraged to assume leadership roles by participating in Society programs and are selected based on scholastic achievement, community service and leadership potential. Nearly 700 applications were received. A business major, Rinehart is a member of the ICC Honors College, where she volunteers for various community events; Supplemental Instruction Leader; president of the Upsilon Sigma Chapter of PTK for 2020-21. Her activities include member of the First Baptist Church of Tupelo. She is the daughter of Jennifer and Chris Rinehart. At ICC, Markham is a biology major. ICC's Salinas selected for prestigious Delta Scholars Program Itawamba Community College sophomore Diana Salinas of Golden has been selected for the prestigious 2021 Delta Scholars Program. The Delta Scholars Summer Institute is a 10-day immersion program during which students will work to identify an issue of inequality or injustice in which they are interested and develop a proposal for a project that will promote dialogue and change around that issue in their own communities or the state of Mississippi. Salinas and the other students will spend the first portion of the program at the Shackouls Honors College at Mississippi State University, where they will engage with faculty and guest lecturers from a range of disciplines to learn about issues currently challenging the people and the economy of Mississippi, including food insecurity, public health, education and more. Substantive lessons designed to teach students about the workings and impact of different systems in the Delta will be intermixed with skills-based workshops designed to give students the planning, research and advocacy skills necessary to begin developing their independent projects. ICC's Morgan, Pounds selected for prestigious Delta Scholars program Sophomores Katherine Morgan of Hatley and Anna Pounds of Golden are the first from Itawamba Community College to be selected for the Delta Scholars Program. The Delta Scholars Summer Institute is a 10-day immersion program for approximately 12 undergraduates committed to improving the living experience of residents in the Mississippi Delta. Working in conjunction with the Harvard Law School Mississippi Delta Fellow, the Institute will be at the Judy and Bobby Shackouls Honors college on the campus of Mississippi State University. The institute will feature informational meetings with academics, policymakers and non-profit organizations in the Delta. Scholars will be mentored by the Harvard Delta Fellow and by faculty advisers who conduct research that focuses on food security, education and economic development in the region. As scholars learn the history of an issue from multidisciplinary perspectives, they will also learn how to advocate local public officials, nongovernmental agencies, business leaders and state representatives in support of an approach that helps remedy the issue. ICC's Allen, Atkins accepted into prestigious Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship Program Itawamba Community College sophomores Emma Grace Allen of Fulton and Payton Atkins of Hamilton have been accepted into the Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship Program (MRPSP). The MRPSP offers scholarships to medical students in Mississippi who agree to practice in underserved rural areas of Mississippi after completing their training for one year for each year they receive the scholarship. Participants will receive mentoring, rural clinical experience, MCAT preparation and a support system on their pathway to becoming a physician. As part of the MRPSP, they join a network of undergraduate students, medical students, residents and practicing physicians, all offering support throughout their medical education and into their future practice. Allen is a biology major at ICC, where she will receive her associate’s degree this month. Her honors and activities include orientation leader, Global Experience, Food Pantry representative, Indian Delegation president, BSU lead team member, Fashion Tribe, STEM Club, Phi Theta Kappa, Honors College, Science Club, Miss ICC 2023, Hall of Fame 2023 and freshman and sophomore Homecoming maid. Record number of ICC students selected Leaders of Promise Scholars Four Itawamba Community College students have been selected among 207 Phi Theta Kappa members named 2021 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholars and will receive a $1,000 scholarship. They include Harley Boone of Guntown, Kaleb Ward of Mooreville, Chloe Evans of Nettleton and Haley Dean of Saltillo. “Itawamba Community College is extremely proud of these scholars who have attained this significant honor,” said Robin Lowe, Phi Theta Kappa contact adviser. “The selection of four students is a record number for ICC, and it definitely is a reflection of the extraordinary students we have.” The Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship Program helps new Phi Theta Kappa members defray educational expenses while enrolled in associate degree programs.
