• ICC faculty present at MCA conference; Stevenson wins top award

             Two Itawamba Community College faculty members were included as presenters for the Mississippi Communication Association meeting held recently at Mississippi College.             Presenters of Great Ideas for Teaching Students (G.I.F.T.S.) and their topics were Dr. Laurie McBride of Fulton, speech and theatre instructor, “It’s Not Just a Shoebox: Using Operation Christmas Child in Public Speaking Class” and Jessi Stevenson, also of Fulton, speech instructor, “GUESSturing to Improve Visual Delivery.”             Their audiences included communication scholars from colleges such as the University of Alabama, University of Arkansas and Mississippi State University. At the conclusion of the conference, Stevenson, who will serve as the communication liaison for MCA for 2023-24, received the Top G.I.F.T.S. • Mississippi Speaker of the House of Representatives Jason White challenges ICC graduates in one of three commencement ceremonies

               Mississippi Speaker of the House of Representatives Jason White challenged Itawamba Community College graduates today (Friday) at the 10 a.m. commencement ceremony at the Davis Event Center at the Fulton Campus to live by the words he shared with his colleagues as they began the new term in January.  “To whom much is given, much is expected,” White said. “I would tell you graduates the same message applies as you enter this new chapter of your lives. Hurdles and challenges certainly await you; don’t get bogged down by the small things, focus on the big picture and make an impact. • Miller presentation is second in Reflecting Mississippi series at ICC-Fulton, Sept. 21

  Mary Miller, writer and assistant professor of English and creative writing (fiction) at The W, will present “An Evening with Mary Miller: A Mississippi Writer’s Reflection,” Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. in the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center Auditorium at the Itawamba Community College Fulton Campus. She will also conduct a writing workshop at 11 a.m., Sept. 22, in the ICC Fulton Campus library.             Born and raised in Jackson, Miller is the author of two collections of short stories, Big World and Always Happy Hour, as well as the novels The Last Days of California and Biloxi. She is a former Michener Fellow at the Michener Center for Writers at the University of Texas and John and Renée Grisham Writer-in-Residence at the University of Mississippi. She earned the B.A. degree in psychology from Mississippi State University, M.A. degree in English from the Center for Writers at the University of Southern Mississippi and the M.F.A. degree in fiction from the Michener Center for Writers at the University of Texas. • ICC to host Summer of Science presentation, Oct. 27

  Itawamba Community College will host a Summer of Science presentation, Oct. 27, at 1:30 p.m. at the David C. Cole Student Services Building at the Fulton Campus.             The presentation is the culmination of a research project between ICC and Brown University. Funding for this project was made possible by Brown University and The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.             Dr. Erica Walker, assistant professor of epidemiology at the Brown University School of Public Health, will be a special guest. She has extensive experience with both environmental exposure assessments and modeling, community surveying and community engagement, focusing on air, noise, visual and water pollution. She practices storm chasing science, which she defines as directing her resources and attention to areas that are typically overlooked. Her credentials include the bachelor’s degree from Simmons University, master’s degree from Tufts University and doctorate from Harvard T.H. • Eudora Welty subject of Fatherree presentation at ICC-Fulton, Aug. 31

              Beverly Fatherree, emerita professor of English at Hinds Community College and Welty House docent, will present “Eudora Welty: The Writer as a Crusader in Fiction and Photography,” Aug. 31 at 6 p.m. in the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center Auditorium at the Itawamba Community College Fulton Campus.             Fatherree taught at Hinds for more than 40 years, beginning as an adjunct instructor in English, moving to a full-time English instructor position for the next 35 years and ending her career as an adjunct instructor in the Writing Center for five years. She retired as the District Curriculum Coordinator for English and the Academic Liaison for Dual Enrollment Instruction. During her time at Hinds, she served on numerous committees, including being named the District Faculty Chair for the Faculty Council and lead editor and writer for several Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accreditation documents. Fatherree has volunteered at the Eudora Welty House in Jackson since it opened in 2005. She has written and performs a one-woman show on Georgia writer Flannery O’Connor. In addition, ...
• Cozart to present third in 'Reflecting Mississippi' series at ICC-Fulton

  Kevin Cozart, coordinator of both operations and community engaged learning and research at the Sarah Isom Center for Women and Gender Studies at the University of Mississippi, will present “Seeing Queerly: The Power of Photography to Change Minds,” Sept. 28 at 6 p.m. in the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center Auditorium at the Itawamba Community College Fulton Campus.             A native Mississippian, Cozart has been a member of the University’s staff since 2004 and has served on the University’s Staff Council, adviser for the UM Pride Network and OUTGrads, president of the Graduate Student Council and co-director of the ALLIES program. An Ole Miss graduate, Cozart earned master’s degrees in journalism with an integrated marketing communications emphasis and in higher education and student personnel with a minor in gender studies. He is also an adjunct instructor at UM. Cozart’s research interests focus on the intersections of gender, sexuality and mass media and journalism as a gendered organization. He is the winner of the 2019 UM Lift Every Voice award and currently serves on the board of directors for OxFilm.             ...
