Overdose prevention resources expanded across all ICC locations

Help in an overdose emergency should be close at hand. Itawamba Community College has placed 25 Emergency Overdose Boxes containing naloxone and other lifesaving resources in main areas across its locations.

ICC Campus Police also is distributing 1,000 fentanyl harm prevention kits to students and employees Sept. 29-30 at all ICC locations. The kits were provided by Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch’s office through its One Pill Can Kill campaign.

Each kit contains two fentanyl test strips, a pair of safety gloves, a safe drug disposal bag, a pill identification card and a QR code to obtain free naloxone through the Mississippi State Department of Health.

ICC Campus Police Chief Jason Dickinson said the distribution offers an important reminder for college students, who may encounter a pill that looks like a legitimate medication but has an unknown source.

“Students may have a pill that is homemade or generic that looks like an actual pill, and it could contain fentanyl,” Dickinson said. “If it is anything not prescribed by a doctor, do not take it”

The distribution follows Fitch’s recent visit to ICC, when her office trained students and employees to administer naloxone and provided the harm prevention kits.
