General 0 Coach Mark Potter, powerful inspirational speaker, will challenge his audience to be “uncommon” as they face today’s difficulties at a special presentation at 7 p.m., Sept. 20, at the Davis Event Center at the Itawamba Community College Fulton Campus. The public is invited, and admission is free. The presentation will include dealing with pressure, failure or embarrassment, documenting negative thoughts and processing controllable goals. His topics are designed to help employees; businesses in human resources, administration and sales; executives; advisers; franchises; colleges; students and teams reach their greatest potential. In December 2016, Potter, Newman University men’s basketball coach of 19 years, announced that the season would be his last and he was following his new passion of speaking on mental health. According to ICC Athletic Director and Dean of Students Chad Case, Potter inspires and challenges audiences with his real story of victory over severe depression. In his presentations, he shares how he overcame obstacles and even suicidal thoughts. “Potter’s practical ideas are designed to help everyone train their brain and be able to practice mental health and wellness strategies,” Case said. During his 30-year coaching career, he saw students coming to college without tools to battle life situations and the adversity that comes with it. Potter was coach of the year five times and named top 15 most influential people in the Wichita sports world. He has been inducted into the Cowley College Hall of Fame, the Newman University Hall of Fame, and most recently, the Wichita Sports Hall of Fame. ICC celebrates STEM Week with special speakers, events Itawamba Community College is celebrating February 3-6 as STEM Week with special events through its organization. They include STEM Club meetings featuring Ole Miss representatives, Feb. 3 and Mississippi State University representatives, Feb. 4; debut of ICC’s planetarium in the John S. Crubaugh Education Building, Feb. 5; and Community College Innovation Challenge, Feb. 6. Although the special events will take place at the Fulton Campus, they are open to all members, including those from both the Tupelo Campus and Belden Center. The STEM Club connects students with an interest in STEM-related fields. Members have an opportunity to attend events with speakers from different fields, network with other students in similar fields of study, meet representatives from universities and local companies, discover and engage in new technologies and support ICC’s five-county district through community service. Delta Health Alliance mobile unit to be at ICC-Fulton Thursday; those vaccinated or taking the shot during the event qualify for ICC scholarship drawing The Delta Health Alliance mobile unit will be on the Fulton Campus of Itawamba Community College at the entrance to Lambert Stadium from 3-7:30 p.m., Thursday (Sept. 16), to offer COVID-19 vaccinations. Participants will join those who have been vaccinated in an opportunity to be entered into a drawing for a $1,000 scholarship to ICC. Those who have received at least one shot should bring their vaccination cards to enter the drawing, which will be at halftime of the ICC-Coahoma game, which begins at 6:30 p.m., according to Tyler Camp, chief of staff and special assistant to the president. The scholarship, which is provided by the Delta Health Alliance, is transferrable to a current or future ICC student. “Itawamba Community College’s partnership in our Mississippi RIVER project is a great opportunity for students and their families to receive vaccines and to help the spread of COVID-19 in our communities,” said Fulton native Dr. Karen Matthews, chief executive officer and president of the Delta Health Alliance. ICC to 'Reach Out' to students, faculty during mental health awareness event Itawamba Community College will Reach Out to both students and faculty/staff next week (Mar. 7-10) to provide support and assistance in the areas covered by mental health. “While we continue to navigate unprecedented times in our world, we recognize that young adults are experiencing much higher levels of stress and are also reporting much higher rates of mental health challenges in recent years,” said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen. “With a nationwide awareness of the challenges that students face, especially resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, including social isolation and rapid transition to remote learning, ICC is actively working to accelerate student and employee assistance in mental health. That support will be in addition to our already active counseling services,” Allen said. ICC’s Reach Out campaign will include such activities as outdoor yoga (Monday), painting kindness rocks and a Spotify playlist (Tuesday), cornhole and cornchips, pet-a-puppy spin and coloring station (Wednesday) and donut and coffee with a cop and #NationalPopcornDay (Thursday). ICC to honor four with Alumni awards during Homecoming activities, Oct. 6 Itawamba Community College will honor its 2022 Alumnus of the Year, Distinguished Service award recipient and Athletic Hall of Fame inductees during Homecoming activities, Oct. 6, at the Fulton Campus. They include Dr. C.K. “Dick” White of Tupelo, Alumnus of the Year; Miss. Rep. Donnie Bell of Fulton, ICC Distinguished Service award; and David Duke of Clinton and Marty Cooper of Fulton, Athletic Hall of Fame. White, who is a native of Fulton, graduated from Itawamba Agricultural High School and from 1969-71 attended IJC where he was a member of the baseball team. In 2020, he retired as chief medical officer of the North Mississippi Medical Center. From 2018-20, he also served as interim chief quality and safety medical officer for North Mississippi Health Services, and since 2016, executive board member of Connected Care Partners CIN. He has an extensive list of honors and awards, including NMMC Surgeon of the Year and Itawamba Agricultural High School Alumnus of the Year. They include Dr. Lance Evans of New Albany, Alumnus of the Year; Jonathan Van Every of Nashville, Tenn. and Dr. David Rather of Tupelo, Athletic Hall of Fame; Johnny Crane of Fulton, Distinguished Service; and Jamey Logan of Tupelo, Young Alumnus of the Year. A 1998 graduate of ICC, Evans became Mississippi’s State Superintendent of Education, July 1. His educational background also includes the bachelor’s degree from Mississippi State University; master’s degree from the University of Mississippi; and educational specialist and doctoral degrees from Delta State University.
