Two ICC adult education students win top state award

Itawamba Community College Adult Education students Jason Texada of Mooreville and Seira Heiss Wojtylko of Tupelo have been selected as Students of the Year by the Mississippi Association of Adult and Community Education.

Texada’s nominator for the award described him as “kind and polite to everyone he encounters, both inside and outside the classroom. Jason is a fitting example of determination because he works hard and never gives up no matter what obstacles he faces.” When he passed the first part of the high school equivalency test, “we all celebrated in the halls, and he even did a little dance.” Texada is affiliated with several churches in the area including Greater Works Outreach, North Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church and New Life Church. An employee of Todd’s Big Star, he is the son of Mario and Melissa Shumpert and Jason Texada Sr.

Wojtylko moved to Mississippi from Michigan where she had been collaborating with her father in the field of welding. She enrolled in ICC’s adult education program to earn her high school equivalency credential since she had completed only the tenth grade, her nominator said. Since then, she has completed Smart Start with a gold level on the WorkKeys (platinum on two of the three parts), taken the ACT, completed Introduction to Welding and was on track to enter ICC’s welding program in August. “Her thirst for knowledge, determination and willingness to do whatever we asked of her are only a few of the qualities that have helped her reach her goals.” The daughter of Richard and Michelle Heiss, she is married to Erik Wojtylko.
