ICC schedules orientation sessions for spring 2025 Itawamba Community College has scheduled orientation sessions for students who plan to enroll for the 2025 spring semester. High school students who graduate in December are highly encouraged to participate in one of the sessions, which are scheduled for Dec. 4 at the Academic and Student Center at the Tupelo Campus and Dec. 5 at the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center at the Fulton Campus at 1 p.m. each day. Students can attend a session regardless of the location they plan to attend in the spring. However, all students, including adult learners, are invited. “Among the advantages of attending an orientation session are scheduling classes early and choosing from a wide variety of options, including days, times and instructors and possibly completing the process before graduation from high school,” said Michael Holloway, director of recruitment and orientation. “The sessions will also provide an opportunity for adult learners to connect with an adviser and to make the transition to college less intimidating.” During the spring semester, students may choose from several instructional delivery methods, including online, face-to-face and hybrid. ... ICC's Precision Machining Technology students receive new toolboxes, courtesy of a generous Haas Foundation grant Students in Itawamba Community College’s Precision Machining Technology program have a new toolbox, courtesy of a generous grant by the Gene Haas Foundation. Among the items in the five-drawer steel tool roller cabinet are a micrometer set; caliper; steel rule; tape measure; adjustable wrench; hex key, drill bit and L-handle sets; hammer; sharpening stone and flat file. “We would like to thank the Gene Haas Foundation for their generous contribution and support of our program and for the difference the toolboxes will make not only in the success of our students but also when they graduate and enter the workforce,” said instructor Jerry Pettigrew. ICC launches net price calculator to provide easily-understood cost and value Itawamba Community College has launched a new and improved net price calculator to ensure that all students understand the cost to attend and especially that it is an affordable option, according to Terry Bland, director of Financial Aid. The College Cost Transparency Initiative – a task force composed of the leaders of 10 higher education associations representing college presidents, financial aid offices and admissions and school counselors – previously announced that more than 360 institutions of higher education have voluntarily committed to follow a set of principles and standards that ensure transparency, clarity and understanding around communicating student financial aid offers, Bland said. ICC automotive technology instructor offers winterization tips It’s been a long hot summer that has extended into fall. With cooler temperatures in the forecast, it’s time to winterize our vehicles before the thermometer plummets and stays. According to Itawamba Community College’s Automotive Technology program director Brad Crowder, it’s best to have your car serviced by a professional for winter conditions. That means to have its battery and coolant tested, inspect the brakes and check belts, hoses, spark plugs, wires and cables. “Battery power decreases as the temperature drops, meaning that it takes more power to start your car in the winter,” Crowder said. As far as coolant, the recommended ratio is between 50/50 and 70/30 of antifreeze to water. “Ask your technician what antifreeze should be used for your vehicle and the appropriate coolant-to-water ratio to prevent against corrosion and potential freezing.” Additional vital steps to take in winterization include inspecting your tires, changing the oil and wiper blades, keeping the washer fluid full and the gas tank at least half full, the front and rear window defrosters ... Area high school emerging scholars honored at ICC event Emerging Scholars who attended a special luncheon in their honor, Nov. 7, not only learned about the opportunities available, but also heard it from Itawamba Community College alumnus and Plantersville native Chloe Evans, who is a graduate of Nettleton High School. “When I first walked through the doors of this campus (Fulton) in 2020, I never imagined the profound impact it would have on my life,” she said. “My first interview, headshot, research project and all-nighter happened here during my time at ICC. "Red, White, and You" currently on display in ICC gallery Now through Dec. 4, Itawamba Community College will host “Red, White, and You,” an exhibition of the work of Jackson artist Ming Donkey in the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center gallery on the Fulton Campus. The exhibit is a multi-media installation combining wall hangings, video and audio media. In the artist’s words, “Red, White and You” offers a visual exploration of contemporary capitalism’s impact on community and identity in America. The title references the American flag, symbolizing freedom and liberty, while reflecting on the ways emotions are manipulated and desires manufactured in our society.
