29 March Backyard Astronomy set for Fulton March 29, 2018 By Thomas, Donna S. General 0 Itawamba Community College will present a Backyard Astronomy session from 6-9 p.m., Apr. 19, at the Fitness Center on the Fulton Campus. The event will feature astronomy-related activities including a portable planetarium from the University of Mississippi; a presentation entitled “The Ringmakers of Saturn” by ICC astronomy instructor Bob Swanson; and a general-interest astronomy video entitled “Dark Universe.” Weather permitting, participants will have an opportunity to view the night sky from the parking lot. Attendees will pick up some naked-eye viewing tips as well as have the chance to look through several of ICC’s telescopes at features such as the waxing crescent moon, the Beehive Cluster and the Hercules Cluster. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Swanson’s background includes Shannon High School, where he taught physics, physical science and earth science; professional meteorologist - six years as a TV weatherman and four years as assistant weather editor of USA Today. He earned bachelor’s degrees in both physics and philosophy from The University of Scranton and a master’s degree in meteorology from Penn State University. In his spare time, Swanson writes and records children’s music about weather (Stormin’ Bob Swanson, the Singing Weatherman) and gives science presentations to local schools, libraries and community groups. ICC, Fulton partner in significant sidewalk project Itawamba Community College and the City of Fulton announced today the awarding of $1.1 million in Federal Transportation Alternative Program funds from the Mississippi Department of Transportation for sidewalk installation along West Main Street. ICC and the City of Fulton will be responsible for 20 percent of the total as well as professional engineering fees, according to John Wayne Harris, director of Projects and Energy Management Systems. The sidewalk will be constructed along West Main Street and will begin in downtown Fulton east of the Fulton Telephone Company and continue to the trailhead, Harris said. Another section will be installed from West Main along Stadium Drive and end at the Access Road. Pushbutton crosswalks at Stadium Drive and in front of both Sheffield Hall and the new ICC residence hall will help ensure the safety of college students, pedestrians and the residents of Fulton. In addition, the project will feature LED decorative post-top lights to provide well-lit pathways to promote student and visitor safety. ICC opens Connection Center, welcomes first Chick-fil-A in Fulton Itawamba Community College marked a major milestone Monday morning with the grand opening of the Connection Center on the Fulton Campus, a new student- and community-focused facility that includes a Chick-fil-A, the first location in Fulton and the first Chick-fil-A along Interstate 22 when entering Mississippi from Alabama. More than 150 people attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony, which featured remarks from Michael Taylor of PryorMorrow Architects, Steven Staub of JESCO Construction and Paul Butler of Sodexo. The Connection Center includes approximately 10,000 square feet of flexible, technology-equipped meeting space that can be configured as one large venue or divided into two smaller spaces. The remaining 3,000 square feet houses Chick-fil-A, operated through Sodexo, ICC’s food service provider. The restaurant is open to students, employees and the public and operates Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. It is closed on Sundays. ICC President Dr. Jay Allen said the opening represents another significant step in the College’s ongoing growth and community engagement. “This facility is exactly what we envisioned, a place that connects our students, our employees and our communities,” Allen said. ... Alum Bishop Alexander to speak at ICC's Unity programs at Fulton, Tupelo Itawamba Community College alumnus Bishop Alexander, who is the director of Alumni Relations at the University of North Alabama, will be the featured speaker for Unity programs in Celebration of Black History Month, Feb. 24, at both the Fulton and Tupelo campuses. The Tupelo Campus program is scheduled for 1 p.m. in the Dining Hall of the Academic and Student Center, and the Fulton Campus program, 6 p.m. in the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium. 'Flowers of Fulton' on display in ICC Gallery through Oct. 30 The paintings of Fulton resident John Underwood are now on display in Itawamba Community College’s W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center Gallery at the Fulton Campus. His exhibition entitled “Flowers of Fulton,” consists of 16 acrylic paintings depicting colorful arrangements of flower bouquets that he says, “were grown here in Fulton.” Underwood, who is an art and antique dealer by trade, graduated from IAHS in 1988 and attended ICC the following year. Additional degrees in fine arts include the bachelor’s from the University of Mississippi and the master’s from the University of Memphis. ICC's Celebration of Unity programs set for Feb. 4 at both Fulton and Tupelo Itawamba Community College’s Student Government Associations and Student Activities have scheduled Celebration of Unity programs at both the Fulton and Tupelo campuses, Feb. 4. The Tupelo Campus program will be at 12:05 p.m. in the student presentation room of the Student Support Center, and the Fulton Campus event will be at 7 p.m. in the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium. Juanita Floyd, vice president of finance and administration for the CREATE Foundation and co-author of “Summer of 1969,” will be the speaker for both programs. She has been employed with the Foundation for almost 35 years. The Foundation established the Bernice Gambrell Endowment Fund in the amount of $10,000 to honor both Floyd on her 20th anniversary as well as her mother. She is active in community affairs, serving on several boards. Floyd was the Tupelo PTO President and was selected “Parent of the Year” in 2008. In August 2019, she was selected as one of Mississippi’s Most Influential African Americans. Her additional honors include Tupelo Trailblazer of the Year, and in 2016, she was the focus of a WTVA ...
