General 0 Itawamba Community College will celebrate Constitution Day, Oct. 22, with a presentation entitled “Power to the People by the People: Northeast Mississippi’s Role in Bringing Electricity to Rural America.” The event is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium at the Fulton Campus. Panelists include Brandon Presley, North Mississippi Public Service Commissioner; Michael Callahan, executive vice president and CEO of Electric Cooperatives of Mississippi; and Chris Stevenson, chairman of the ICC Social Science Division. The Master of Ceremonies for the evening will be ICC History Instructor Megan Eidt. Members of the audience will have an opportunity for a question and answer session at the conclusion of the presentation. The event, which is sponsored by the ICC Political Science Club, is free and open to the public. Both online and face-to-face options are available. Students who meet eligibility requirements may qualify for tuition assistance. They include Electrician Assistant, a face-to-face class offered at the Belden Center. It begins Oct. 19, will meet from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, through Nov. 9. The program provides the foundational knowledge of basic math and safety rules; the use of hand, measuring and power tools; basic electricity and residential wiring. ICC pathway programs set to begin in October Registration is underway at the Itawamba Community College Belden Center for several pathway programs that are scheduled to begin in October. They include Certified Nursing Assistant (two classes), Commercial Truck Driving, Food Service Pathway, Manufacturing Skills Basic Certification, Basic Construction and Quality Improvement Associate. Certified Nursing Assistant will meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 5-9 p.m. Oct. 12-Dec. 16, and the day class will meet Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Oct. 12-27. The program prepares participants to take the exam to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. Upon successful program and examination completion, employment could be available in nursing homes, medical centers, home healthcare providers and clinics. Commercial Truck Driving begins Oct. 12 and will meet Monday through Friday from 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. through Nov. 6. The program prepares individuals to drive Class A semi trucks and other commercial vehicles. It includes instruction in operating diesel-powered vehicles, loading and unloading cargo, reporting delays or accidents on the road, verifying loads against shipping records and keeping necessary records. ICC's Travel Tribe sets Ignite the Fight 5K, Oct. 26 Itawamba Community College’s Travel Tribe is inviting everyone to lace up their running shoes and participate in its Ignite the Fight 5K to raise awareness for breast cancer research and money for its program. The glow run will begin at 6 p.m., Oct. 26, at the Fulton Campus Cypress Pavilion. Awards will be given in multiple divisions. Those who preregister by the Oct. 15 deadline will receive a t-shirt. Packet pick up will be Oct. 25 from 2-4 p.m. or race day, from 5-5:30 p.m. The preregistration fee is $25, or race day, $30. Ghost runners are also welcome. ICC to sponsor innovative dinner and demo series in October Itawamba Community College will sponsor a dinner and demo series at three Tupelo restaurants beginning Oct. 12 at 4:30 p.m. at Forklift with chef Cooper Miller. Additional sessions are scheduled for 5:30 p.m., October 17, at Neon Pig with chef Brooke Ramsey and at 6 p.m., Oct. 24, at Park Heights with chef Tom Lester. “The chefs at each location will provide a demonstration related to the dinner preparation, which will follow,” according to Josh Gammill, ICC director of Continuing Education, which is cosponsoring the series with the Food Management Certification pathway. “The three local restaurants and their executive chefs have created a unique interactive experience for participants,” Gammill said. Limited seating is available. ICC to honor five during Alumni awards presentation at Homecoming, Oct. 17 Itawamba Community College will honor its 2024 Alumnus of the Year, Athletic Hall of Fame inductees, Distinguished Service and Young Alumnus of the Year award recipients during Homecoming activities, Oct. 17, at the Fulton Campus. They include Dr. Lance Evans of New Albany, Alumnus of the Year; Jonathan Van Every of Nashville, Tenn. and Dr. David Rather of Tupelo, Athletic Hall of Fame; Johnny Crane of Fulton, Distinguished Service; and Jamey Logan of Tupelo, Young Alumnus of the Year. A 1998 graduate of ICC, Evans became Mississippi’s State Superintendent of Education, July 1. His educational background also includes the bachelor’s degree from Mississippi State University; master’s degree from the University of Mississippi; and educational specialist and doctoral degrees from Delta State University. National Day on Writing set for Oct. 23 High school students in Itawamba Community College’s five-county district are invited to submit writing, music and artwork, which will be judged for the National Day on Writing, Oct. 23. Students in Chickasaw, Itawamba, Lee. Monroe and Pontotoc counties are invited to submit essays, poetry, short stories and artwork (drawing and painting) by the 4:30 p.m., Oct. 11 deadline. Awards, including first, second and third places, and honorable mention will be presented during a reception at 6:30 p.m. that day in the ICC-Fulton Learning Resource Center. The work will be displayed in ICC’s gallery in the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center through Nov. 2.
