Extended hospital stay leads to appreciation for nurses and Dzikielewski scholarship When Joe Dzikielewski was a patient in the hospital for seven weeks in 2019, he was impressed with the care provided by his nurses, most of whom were Itawamba Community College graduates. “He enjoyed asking them where they went to school and learning more about them,” his wife, Wanda, said. That appreciation has led to her establishing the Dr. Joseph F. Dzikielewski Memorial Nursing Scholarship at Itawamba Community College to benefit full-time sophomores in the Associate Degree Nursing program. “This is my home and was Joe’s home for 30 years plus,” said the ICC alumnus. “I think ICC is a great place to start an education and a career. It gives our people not only a significant economic opportunity as well as an education that transfers out to the next stage in life. I think it’s extremely important to help younger people who may have to struggle to afford college.” Dr. Joe, as he was known, was a counselor at Itawamba Agricultural High School several years ago. ICC joins in National Truck Driver Appreciation Week; now recruiting students for upcoming classes Itawamba Community College is joining with the American Trucking Association in celebrating National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, Sept. 15-21. The weeklong celebration honors the millions of professional truck drivers who deliver America’s freight safely and securely every day. It is especially meaningful to Itawamba Community College, which is also celebrating its Commercial Truck Driving program that is now recruiting students for classes that will begin soon at its Tupelo Campus. ICC’s CTD program prepares individuals to drive Class A semitrucks and other commercial vehicles. It includes instruction in operating diesel-powered vehicles, loading and unloading cargo, reporting delays or accidents on the road, verifying loads against shipping records and keeping necessary records. It is designed to give the future driver a complete and thorough understanding of logbooks, trip records and the motor carrier safety regulations of the United States Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration. Honorary captains, who will participate in the coin toss and be recognized during pregame beginning at 6 p.m., will be U.S. Rep. Trent Kelly of Saltillo, who has spent 36 years in the Mississippi Army National Guard as a Combat Engineer and is currently serving as a Major General; North Mississippi EMS Authority Co-Director Al Wright of Tupelo, who also is an adjunct faculty member for ICC’s EMS Basic program; and North Mississippi Medical Center Safety Specialist Thomas Walker of Tupelo, retired Fire Chief for the City of Tupelo. Alumni Association, I Club members invited to appreciation night Itawamba Community College Alumni Association and Indian Club members are invited to attend an Appreciation Night, from 5-8 p.m., Feb. 3, in the Davis Event Center hospitality room on the Itawamba Community College Fulton Campus. Members of both groups will receive free food and admission to the ICC/Northeast basketball games and can visit with ICC coaches, administrators and staff.
