General 0 Several area residents will participate in a commencement ceremony for the practical nursing program at Itawamba Community College at 7 p.m., Dec. 15, at the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium at the Fulton Campus. They include Taylor Bunch of Aberdeen; Kelsie Bentley of Belmont; Casey Mosley of Bruce; Jennifer Watkins, Endia Wright, both of Byhalia; Jasmine Barnes of Guntown; Ashley Anderson of Houston; Madonna Douglas of Mantachie; Russell Yates of New Albany; Lindsay Barnett, Janie Thomas, both of Pontotoc; Heather Shannon of Saltillo; Linsey Lann, Shannon Prewitt, both of Smithville; Trenecia Logan of Starkville; Savanna Armstrong, Dakayla Baird, Jennifer Ewing, Lacey Harden, Rachel Lomenick, Alison Michael, Natalie Pegues, Donmetria Wright, all of Tupelo; Alex Belk of Vardaman; and Emily Fears of Wren. Upon completion of the 12-month (three-semester) program, ICC’s graduates receive a certificate of completion and are eligible to take the national board exam (N-CLEX) to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. Dr. Kristi Dempsey of Spruce Pine, Ala. is the director of ICC’s licensed practical nursing program, and instructors are Tammy Jones of Pontotoc, Lisa McNeese of Smithville; Lisa Pearson of Amory and Patricia Robbins of Blue Springs. Related Articles More than 600 graduates participate in 2022 ICC commencement ceremonies More than 600 graduates of Itawamba Community College crossed the stage at the Davis Event Center on the Fulton Campus May 13 during three commencement ceremonies and were rewarded with Associate of Arts or Associate of Applied Science degrees or certificates. They were among more than 1,000 graduates who have earned degrees from ICC this year, including Kelly Jo Ashley of New Albany, who participated during the 5 p.m. health sciences ceremony. Ashley, who was a certified elementary teacher for 11 years, began the Associate Degree Nursing program during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. “None of us knew what to expect,” she said. “However, as I reflect on the past two years at ICC, I am beyond thankful to the faculty, staff and all other support personnel who not only made this journey possible, but who helped us to grow and learn as future nurses and people. COVID-19 continues to impact ICC; forces changes in commencement and summer classes The COVID-19 virus continues to impact Itawamba Community College’s normal operations and schedule of activities. Among the latest are the 2020 commencement ceremony and summer classes. As advised by the Center for Disease Control and the Mississippi Department of Health and after much deliberation, ICC is postponing the May commencement ceremony and is exploring options “to celebrate the accomplishments of our outstanding graduates,” according to ICC President Dr. Jay Allen. In addition, ICC is continuing its summer schedule, but will transition all courses to an online format until it is safe to conduct face-to-face classes. Registration is currently underway for intersession classes, which begin May 11, and for traditional first summer/full-term, eLearning full-term and first and second four-week classes. Traditional first and full-term classes begin May 26, and eLearning, June 1. “The decisions that are being made are tough and may not be ideal,” Allen said, “but we continue to make the safety of our students, employees and our communities a priority.” ICC to host multiple commencement ceremonies Itawamba Community College will host multiple traditional commencement ceremonies at the Davis Event Center on the Fulton Campus, May 12. They include Associate of Arts (Last Name A-I), Associate of Applied Science and Certificates, Career Education programs and Middle College, 10 a.m.; Associate of Arts (Last Name J-Z), 2 p.m. and Associate of Applied Science and Certificates, Health Science programs, 5 p.m. In addition, an Adult Education commencement ceremony is scheduled for 6 p.m., May 11. Speaker of the House Jason White to deliver keynote address at ICC 10 a.m. commencement ceremony, May 10 Mississippi Representative Jason White will be the speaker for Itawamba Community College’s 10 a.m. commencement ceremony, May 10, at the Davis Event Center on the Fulton Campus. In January, White was elected as Mississippi’s 62nd Speaker of the House. The Kosciusko native began his service in the Mississippi House of Representatives, District 48, which consists of portions of Attala, Carroll, Holmes and Leake counties, in August 2011. Following re-election in 2016, he was named Rules Chairman and elected Republican Floor Leader by the Republican Caucus. In 2020, his Mississippi House colleagues elected him Speaker Pro Tempore, and his fellow Republicans elected him Republican Caucus Chairman. White, who is also the City Attorney for Kosciusko, represents a number of governmental entities and utility boards and providers. His previous service includes former Municipal Court Judge and Youth Court Judge and Board of Aldermen for the Town of West. He is also involved in a number of civic duties, including current president of the Attala County Bar Association and President of the West Historical and Preservation Society. Hurdles and challenges certainly await you; don’t get bogged down by the small things, focus on the big picture and make an impact.
