Career Center, General 0 Registration is underway at Itawamba Community College for three career pathway programs that will begin in February at the Belden Center. They include Food Management Certification, Welding and Cutting and Electrician Assistant. Food Management Certification will meet Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m., February 18-March 21. During the hands-on, four-week class, students will learn the essential skills needed to thrive in the restaurant and hospitality industry. Included in the curriculum are both ServSafe® Food Manager and Alcohol certifications, menu planning preparation, assistance with and execution of catered events, résumé/interview skills and front- and back-of-the-house operations. Cost is $460, but tuition assistance and scholarships are available for qualified applicants. Introduction to Welding and Cutting is designed to give students entry-level skills in welding and cutting. The intent is to prepare students to do the very basic GMAW and SMAW welding jobs that some industries and businesses require. The class can also be useful to the small farmer or business owner who has many do-it-yourself projects. Different types of welding can be emphasized depending on the individual class, which also includes a basic introduction to oxy fuel cutting, welding safety, voltage regulation and setting wire feed speeds as well as a lot of “hands-on” practice. The class meets Mondays and Wednesdays, February 3 through April 16, from 5-9 p.m. Cost is $1,000. Tuition assistance and scholarships are available for qualified applicants. Electrician Assistant will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9 p.m. from February 4 through April 24. The program prepares individuals to work closely with their supervising electrician to perform routine electrical work. It provides the foundational knowledge of basic math and basic safety rules; the use of hand, measuring and power tools; basic electricity and residential wiring. Students can also prepare for entry-level jobs in industry or private businesses. Cost is $850. Tuition assistance and scholarships are available for qualified applicants. The program prepares individuals to work closely with their supervising electrician to perform routine electrical work. In the 16-session Small Engine Repair pathway, students prepare for a career as they develop skills in basic maintenance, recoil systems, fuel systems, ignition systems/electrical circuits and disassembling and rebuilding small engines. Certified Nursing Assistant will meet from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, Sept. 21-Oct. 6. The program prepares participants to take the exam to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. Upon successful program and examination completion, employment could be available in nursing homes, medical centers, home healthcare providers and clinics. Commercial Truck Driving begins Sept. 9 and will meet from 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, through Oct. 2. The program prepares individuals to drive Class A semi trucks and other commercial vehicles. It includes instruction in operating diesel-powered vehicles, loading and unloading cargo, reporting delays or accidents on the road, verifying loads against shipping records and keeping necessary records. The curriculum used in this course is the Society for Human Resource Management 2020 Learning System, which provides an in-depth overview of the knowledge and industry expertise needed to sit for and pass the SHRM-CP certification exam.
