General 4 Three creative writing students at Itawamba Community College were among those who gathered on the Holmes Community College Ridgeland Campus, Apr. 12, to receive their accolades as winners in the 2019 Mississippi Community College Creative Writers Association competition. They included Mary-Elizabeth Moore of Red Bay, Ala., first in the drama category for “Over Your Shoulder;” Cierra Tucker of Tupelo, third place in drama for “Sam Jones and the Order of the Dodecahedron;” and Mikayla Powell of Amory, honorable mention in poetry for “Me, Too.” The competition included seven categories: poetry, fiction, drama, creative nonfiction, literary essay, best professionally-printed journal and best in-house journal. Judges included Dr. Don Hubele, English professor and chair of the Belhaven University English Department; Paula Lambert, literary and visionary artist and author; Phyllis W. Seawright, assistant professor of communication/theatre at Mississippi College; Michael Farris Smith, award-winning author; and Marshall Ramsey, author, syndicated cartoonist, radio/television host and editor at-large for Mississippi Today. Related Articles ICC students among recipients of 2021 Creative Writing awards Three students at Itawamba Community College were among the winners in the 2021 Mississippi Community College Creative Writers Association competition. They include Valerie Murrell of Mooreville, first place in creative nonfiction for “Blessed Beyond Belief;” Charlie Wright of Randolph, first place in drama for “East Of Damnation: Chapter 1;” and Morgan Wilson of Tupelo, third place in short fiction for “A Trait Very Much Admirable.” Wright also won a first place award last year. The competition included poetry, short story, essay (creative nonfiction), literary essay, dramatic writing and college literary magazine. The awards were presented Apr. 23 during a virtual ceremony originating at the Pearl River Forest County Center in Hattiesburg. ICC students win state creative writing awards Several Itawamba Community College students recently received awards from the Mississippi Community College Creative Writing Association for their work. They include Blake Lyon of Smithville, first place in Drama for “Happy Anniversary;” Luke Nichols of Tupelo, second place in Drama for “AD&D 5e Story – Chapter 1;” and Tyrianna Brooks of Okolona, honorable mention in Short Story for “Don’t Go.” In addition, ICC’s literary magazine, The Calliope, placed first. Editors are Shawn Whittington of Saltillo, art; and English instructor Keith Morris of Tupelo, poetry. State-level winners received certificates and a copy of Writer, which publishes the student winners. Statewide first and second place winners received monetary prizes of $100 and $60 respectively. Chief editor is Shawn Whittington of Saltillo, and English instructor Keith Morris of Tupelo, poetry editor. State-level winners will receive certificates and a copy of The Community College Writer, which publishes the student winners. They include Dixie Owens of Amory, third place in poetry for “Staring;” second place in short story for “Good Morning” and third place in short story for “Hide and Seek;” Emma Logan of Fulton, first place in literary essay for “Literature and Disney Classics;” Sydney Freeman of Houston, honorable mention in poetry for “Tamagotchi;” Madeline Comer of Mantachie, first place in poetry for “Just Pictures;” Emory Reinhard of Mantachie, honorable mention in short story for “Deborah and Candice;” Adam Harmon of Nettleton, first place in short story for “Amidst Butterflies and Crows;” Anna Maldonado of Nettleton, first place in essay (creative nonfiction) for “Tied up with Twins;” Kent Humphries of Vina, Ala., first place in drama for “Nun with a Gun;” and Mackenzie Sneed of Thaxton, second place in poetry for “Ink.” They will be recognized during SKD’s induction ceremony, Apr. 17 at 6 p.m. at the W.O.
