Whitt Willis accepted into prestigious Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship program

Whitt Willis of Madison, formerly of Amory, a recent graduate of Itawamba Community College, has been accepted into the prestigious Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship program.

In 2007, the Mississippi Legislature authorized the Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship program, creating a unique program that identifies rural college students who aspire to return to their roots to practice medicine. Academic enrichment, faculty and physician mentoring as well as solid medical school financial support through the MRPSP will enable Willis and other capable young Mississippians to address the challenge of Mississippi’s healthcare crisis.

“We are excited to have Whitt be a part of the Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship Program,” said Tabora Cook, executive director of the Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship Program. “His passion for rural medicine is exactly what our program and the state of Mississippi need. We look forward to supporting Whitt on his journey to become a rural physician.”

While at ICC, Willis, who is a graduate of Amory High School, was president of the Student Government Association and a member of the Academic Calendar, Financial Aid and curriculum committees and Student Activities Board; Orientation Leader, Food Pantry Representative, Natural Science Instructional Support Tutor; and a member of the STEM Club, PEAK Club, Humanities Club, Honors College, Phi Theta Kappa and Sigma Kappa Delta and former Student Activities student worker. His honors included Mr. ICC 2024, Hall of Fame and President’s List. Willis volunteers at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and for the Jackson Free Clinic.  He will transfer to Mississippi State University to earn a degree in microbiology and subsequently to enter medical school to prepare for a career as a Family Medicine Physician. He is the son of Walt and Susan Willis.

The MRPSP offers scholarships to medical students in Mississippi who agree to practice in underserved rural areas of Mississippi after completing their training for one year for each year after they receive the scholarship. Participants receive mentoring, rural clinical experience, MCAT preparation and a support system on their pathway to becoming a physician. As part of the MRPSP, he joins a network of undergraduate students, medical students, residents and practicing physicians, all offering support throughout his medical education and into his future practice.
