ICC alumnus Jason Dickinson returns to become Campus Police Chief 28 years after he first enrolled as a student

           Itawamba Community College alumnus Jason Dickinson of Mantachie has returned to his alma mater to become Campus Police Chief 28 years after he first enrolled as a student.             On July 1, Dickinson started his new job after spending 23 years working patrol and investigating. Dickinson said he applied because he wants to make a difference in the young lives of the students. Although he has never worked in the college environment, he wants to help or keep them on the right path and explain to them what a bad decision can bring. Dickinson earned two associate’s degrees from ICC, one in agribusiness and the other, in Law Enforcement Technology. “My first stint as a student was in 1993, and it was an adjustment straight out of a small high school. The best part was I met my wife of 25 years now in music appreciation class.” Dickinson’s second time as a student begin in 2015, when he enrolled to obtain a law enforcement degree. Electrician Assistant pathway set to begin at ICC-Belden, Sept. 14

Registration is underway for an Electrician Assistant pathway class that is scheduled to begin Sept. 14 at the Itawamba Community College Belden Center (3200 Adams Farm Rd.).             The class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5-9 p.m. through Dec. 9.             The program prepares individuals as electrician assistants to work closely with their supervising electrician to perform routine electrical work. It provides the foundational knowledge of basic math and safety rules; the use of hand, measuring and power tools; basic electricity and residential wiring. ICC updates operational plan for fall 2021

Itawamba Community College will welcome thousands of students, Aug. 16, with an updated operational plan.             “For months, we have planned to resume ‘normal operations’ this fall, but there is significant concern regarding the current wave of the pandemic, which is especially affecting the younger segment of our population,” said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen in an email to the staff. “Many efforts were made over the summer to assist with the full transition; however, as I have continually stated since March 2020, the safety of our employees and students is of utmost importance.”             Effective Aug. 9, the plan, which is level two of a four-level plan, will require face coverings in all buildings at all three ICC locations; physical distancing in full-capacity classes; enhanced cleaning protocols; continuation of hand sanitizing stations; continuation of the Safely together course for all employees and students; class testing and proctoring adjustments; plexiglass dividers between computer testing stations, labs and customer service areas and some limitations on capacity at indoor events and activities.             “We believe that this mask mandate will be temporary, but ICC will continue to ...

Adult education classes beginning in ICC's five-county district

Adult education classes are beginning at several locations in the Itawamba Community College five-county district.             The schedule includes             Chickasaw County – Tuesday through Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., WIN Job Center (210 South Monroe St., Houston);             Itawamba County – Monday and Tuesday, 4-7 p.m., Old Grammar School (603 South Cummings St. Fulton);             Lee County – Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and Monday and Tuesday, 5:30-8:30 p.m., Belden Center (3200 Adams Farm Road, Belden);             Monroe County – Tuesday and Thursday, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5-8 p.m., WIN Job Center, (1619 Highway 25 No., Amory); and             Pontotoc County – Monday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., WIN Job Center (316 Coffee St., Pontotoc).             English as a Second Language classes meet at the ICC Belden Center Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5-8 p.m.             There is no cost for the classes.             GED and HiSET testing is continuing on a weekly basis, and all program-enrolled students take the GED or HiSET free of charge. Registration continues for ICC's Gateway program

Registration is continuing for the Gateway program at Itawamba Community College.             The program is designed for individuals who are between the ages of 16-24, do not have a high school diploma or its equivalent, want career coaching and are serious about exploring employment opportunities. In addition, those who have a high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma may qualify if they have another type of barrier, including but not limited to, single parent, low income, disabilities and homeless. Enrollments are currently being accepted for participants in Chickasaw, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe and Pontotoc counties. Open enrollment for classes in the one-week program begins Mondays at 9 a.m. at the ICC Belden Center (3200 Adams Farm Rd.). ICC's Paralegal Technology program ranks second in the nation

            Itawamba Community College’s Paralegal Technology program has been ranked second in the nation by College Values Online.             ICC has been identified as having one of the top most affordable accredited online paralegal certificate programs, according to ICC President Dr. Jay Allen. “The  elite ranking is a testament to the innovative programs that ICC offers as we ensure that our students have the best start in their careers.” The ranking considered tuition and return on investment.             College Values Online’s mission is to provide assistance in selecting the best college for each individual situation by offering rankings of schools and various degree programs in addition to information on numerous career options from a value perspective. ICC's Allen named to prestigious AACC Board

Itawamba Community College President Dr. Jay Allen has been named to the American Association of Community College Board of Directors for a three-year term.             He is one of two Mississippi community college presidents serving on the prestigious board, which acts on behalf of the institutional members to create and maintain a vision for AACC, provide a national voice and advocacy for the community college mission and to determine and ensure that the organization adheres to appropriate standards of performance. A total of 32 presidents serve on the Board. Allen is an affiliate council representative and board member for the Community Colleges of Appalachia, which serves the common interests of colleges and their communities through programs and services responsive to the unique cultural, geographic and economic development challenges facing the region. ICC schedules Food Service Pathway class for Aug. 3 at Belden

            Itawamba Community College has scheduled a Food Service Pathway class at the Belden Center (3200 Adams Farm Rd.) beginning Aug. 3.             Classes will meet Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. through Aug. 27.             The program includes Serve Safe® Food Manager Certification, Serve Safe® Alcohol Certification, CPR, certificate of completion, proper food handling standards, kitchen safety practices, culinary techniques, interview skills and résumé building, money handling and front of the house and back of the house operations. Record number of ICC students selected Leaders of Promise Scholars

Four Itawamba Community College students have been selected among 207 Phi Theta Kappa members named 2021 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholars and will receive a $1,000 scholarship. They include Harley Boone of Guntown, Kaleb Ward of Mooreville, Chloe Evans of Nettleton and Haley Dean of Saltillo. “Itawamba Community College is extremely proud of these scholars who have attained this significant honor,” said Robin Lowe, Phi Theta Kappa contact adviser. “The selection of four students is a record number for ICC, and it definitely is a reflection of the extraordinary students we have.” The Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship Program helps new Phi Theta Kappa members defray educational expenses while enrolled in associate degree programs. Scholars are encouraged to assume leadership roles by participating in Society programs and are selected based on scholastic achievement, community service and leadership potential. More than 900 applications were received. A total of $207,000 is awarded through the Leaders of Promise Scholarship Program.
