ICC responds to State Auditor's claims

    Itawamba Community College has issued a statement in response to allegations made this week by State Auditor agents about  illegal activity regarding workforce training by the institution or its current or former employees.     According to the statement, “For over two years, Itawamba Community College has fully cooperated with and been incredibly responsive to the Mississippi State Auditor’s Office in its investigation. In addition, the College hired a former United States Attorney and a well-respected, regional law firm to conduct an internal investigation into allegations made by State Auditor agents.     “Based upon that internal investigation, the College strongly denies any and all allegations of illegal activity by the institution or its current or former employees. Throughout all of this, ICC has continued to provide unparalleled workforce training pursuant to state law for both our communities and our state. ICC to host free MiBEST information session, Oct. 19, at Belden Center

Itawamba Community College will host an information session on how individuals can earn college credits and certification in HVAC, welding/cutting or Certified Nursing Assistant while working on their high school equivalency credentials at 2 p.m., Oct. 19, at the Belden Center (3200 Adams Farm Rd.).             The free event is part of a commemoration of MiBEST Week, which is Oct. 18-23.             The Mississippi Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training program is a workforce and economic development initiative that moves low-skilled, noncredentialed Mississippians from the economic sidelines into careers earning family-sustaining wages, according to Linzy Patterson, ICC director of adult education.             The session will also cover information on academic success and financial aid.             Patterson said that pathways in addition to HVAC, welding/cutting and CNA will be available soon.             For more information, call (662) 407-1517 or email amshannon@iccms.edu.

Kellogg Foundation grant provides opportunity for returning to college

            Students who left college at least two years ago without a degree can apply for a grant to help overcome financial barriers that may keep them from returning to college to complete the requirements for their degrees.             The W.K. Kellogg Foundation recently awarded the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning $1.3 million to fund Mississippi’s Complete 2 Compete Tuition Assistance Grant through 2023. Funds can be used at any of the public universities or community colleges in Mississippi.             The Complete 2 Compete program provides one-on-one support for adult learners who have earned college credits, but not a degree, and enables them to turn their deferred dreams of earning a degree into reality.             Qualifying returning students will receive a $1,000 grant that can be renewed every semester. The award helps pay for any coursework needed to graduate and can help repay prior debt to allow students the opportunity to return and graduate.             There are more than 200,000 prior students who qualify for the Complete 2 Compete program. ICC's Public Health Technology ranked fifth in the nation

            Itawamba Community College has been named one of 2021’s best schools for online programs and courses in healthcare education by EduMed.org.             ICC’s Public Health Technology program is ranked fifth in the nation.             “Itawamba Community College appreciates this ranking and recognition by EduMed.org,” said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen. “It is validation that ICC provides flexible, affordable and student-centered programs. Our students are our top priority, and their success is our success.”             Only eight percent of U.S. postsecondary institutions earned a ranking position, according to EduMed.org, which researched and analyzed more than 7,700 accredited schools using data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and from the schools themselves. The website’s data science team then applied a proprietary algorithm to rank all qualifying schools for each healthcare discipline. Food Service Pathway class date changed; now set to begin Oct. 6

             Itawamba Community College has scheduled a Food Service Pathway class at the Belden Center (3200 Adams Farm Rd.) beginning Oct. 6.             Classes will meet Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. through Nov. 5.             The program includes Serve Safe® Food Manager Certification, Serve Safe® Alcohol Certification, CPR, certificate of completion, proper food handling standards, kitchen safety practices, culinary techniques, interview skills and résumé building, money handling and front of the house and back of the house operations. ICC STEM project receives MentorLink grant

            Itawamba Community College has been selected as one of the winning colleges in the American Association of Community College’s MentorLinks: Advancing Technological Education program.             Part of a national initiative supported by the National Science Foundation, the MentorLinks is an AACC member benefit.             “Itawamba Community College is extremely grateful to the AACC for the opportunity and awarding of this significant grant that will make a difference in the lives of many of our students who soon will be able to explore STEM areas,” said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen. “We expect this interest to translate into more majors and ultimately more graduates in these fields.”             The goals for ICC’s project, entitled Full STEM Ahead: Promoting Pathways in STEM, include increase enrollment and retention in STEM courses and career education programs, increase the number of graduates in STEM fields and career education programs and to facilitate student transfer in STEM fields.             The two-year $20,000 grant for the period of October 1, 2021-November 30, 2023 will include salaries, benefits, travel, materials or resources and equipment.             ...

ICC dedicates SIM lab at the Tupelo Campus

            Itawamba Community College dedicated the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation Simulation Laboratory in the Health Science Education Center on its Tupelo Campus, Sept. 20.             “Today we recognize our strong partnership with our friends at the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation,” ICC President Dr. Jay Allen said during the ceremony, which was abbreviated due to COVID precautions. “We have received approximately $175,000 over the past seven years for equipment and upgrades. The Carpenter Foundation understands our mission and the impact ICC has on our communities.”             Gifts from the Carpenter Foundation have supported all of ICC’s Health Science programs with technology, equipment upgrades and student and faculty support.             According to Dr. Dana Walker, director, ICC’s Associate Degree Nursing program has utilized the funds to purchase equipment such as bar code scanners to mimic medication scanners used in healthcare to improve patient safety, manikin replacement parts to reflect lifelike scenarios instead of utilization of the imagination that is sometimes limited and emergency equipment for students to have hands-on training to improve patient ...

Registration underway for eight-week eLearning classes at ICC

Registration for eight-week eLearning classes is continuing at both the Fulton and Tupelo campuses of Itawamba Community College.             Classes begin on Oct. 18, and the deadline to register is Oct. 19.             ICC offers academic, career education, workforce and eLearning classes. Susan Loden's love for family, students evolves into ICC scholarship endowment

            “Susan Loden lived life to the fullest, a driven lady…very smart,” said her husband, Aaron, when describing the longtime Itawamba Community College economics instructor, who died in 2005.             “She sang in church even when very sick,” Aaron continued. “She loved her children (Kayla and Clayton) and took excellent care of them. I adored her.”             And that love has evolved into the Susan E. Loden Memorial Endowed Scholarship at ICC, which will enable Itawamba County students who have financial need to continue their education for years to come.             Recipients must be full-time students who have and maintain a 2.5 grade point average. Potential success in college will also be considered.             An ICC alumnus and Fulton native, Susan earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Ole Miss. She was hired by her mentor, former dean Dr. Bill Edmonson, and began teaching in 1988. “She loved her work and was especially proud of her SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) members,” Aaron said. ICC offers Enhanced Forklift Operator Training beginning Oct. 7

            Registration is underway for an Enhanced Forklift Operator Training class at Itawamba Community College scheduled for Oct. 7 at the Belden Center (3200 Adams Farm Rd.).             The class, which will meet from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., will enable individuals to receive hands-on training on three different classifications of forklifts: Standup Rider (Class 1), Order Selector (Class 2) and LP Gas Powered Sit-Down Forklift (Class 4).             Topics include the requirements of the OSHA Powered Industrial Truck Regulation 29 CFR 1910.178, safe powered industrial truck operation and how forklifts work, identification of operating hazards as well as the general principles of safe operation and how to properly inspect and maintain a forklift.             Cost is $85.             To register or for more information, contact Becky Kelly at (662) 407-1500 or email rakelly@iccms.edu.
