ICC dedicates SIM lab at the Tupelo Campus Itawamba Community College dedicated the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation Simulation Laboratory in the Health Science Education Center on its Tupelo Campus, Sept. 20. “Today we recognize our strong partnership with our friends at the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation,” ICC President Dr. Jay Allen said during the ceremony, which was abbreviated due to COVID precautions. “We have received approximately $175,000 over the past seven years for equipment and upgrades. The Carpenter Foundation understands our mission and the impact ICC has on our communities.” Gifts from the Carpenter Foundation have supported all of ICC’s Health Science programs with technology, equipment upgrades and student and faculty support. Susan Loden's love for family, students evolves into ICC scholarship endowment “Susan Loden lived life to the fullest, a driven lady…very smart,” said her husband, Aaron, when describing the longtime Itawamba Community College economics instructor, who died in 2005. “She sang in church even when very sick,” Aaron continued. “She loved her children (Kayla and Clayton) and took excellent care of them. I adored her.” And that love has evolved into the Susan E. Loden Memorial Endowed Scholarship at ICC, which will enable Itawamba County students who have financial need to continue their education for years to come. Recipients must be full-time students who have and maintain a 2.5 grade point average. Potential success in college will also be considered. An ICC alumnus and Fulton native, Susan earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Ole Miss. She was hired by her mentor, former dean Dr. Bill Edmonson, and began teaching in 1988. “She loved her work and was especially proud of her SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) members,” Aaron said. ICC offers Enhanced Forklift Operator Training beginning Oct. 7 Registration is underway for an Enhanced Forklift Operator Training class at Itawamba Community College scheduled for Oct. 7 at the Belden Center (3200 Adams Farm Rd.). The class, which will meet from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., will enable individuals to receive hands-on training on three different classifications of forklifts: Standup Rider (Class 1), Order Selector (Class 2) and LP Gas Powered Sit-Down Forklift (Class 4). Topics include the requirements of the OSHA Powered Industrial Truck Regulation 29 CFR 1910.178, safe powered industrial truck operation and how forklifts work, identification of operating hazards as well as the general principles of safe operation and how to properly inspect and maintain a forklift. ICC schedules Fall Preview Days for high school seniors High school seniors will have an opportunity to learn about student life at Itawamba Community College through Fall Preview Days, which have been scheduled for both the Fulton and Tupelo campuses. Dates include Oct. 21, Nov. 4 and 12 at the Fulton Campus, and Oct. 22 at the Tupelo Campus. Morning sessions begin with check in at 8 a.m. and close by 12:15 p.m. with optional campus and housing tours from 1-2:30 p.m. Afternoon sessions will begin with check in at 1 p.m. and close by 5:30 p.m. with housing and campus tours from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The opportunity will include information about ICC’s academic, health science and career education programs, and participants will hear directly from faculty within the areas. ICC's Travel Tribe sets Ignite the Fight 5K, Oct. 26 Itawamba Community College’s Travel Tribe is inviting everyone to lace up their running shoes and participate in its Ignite the Fight 5K to raise awareness for breast cancer research and money for its program. Most ICC face-to-face fall semester classes to end prior to Thanksgiving break Most of Itawamba Community College’s in-person classes will conclude for the 2021 fall semester prior to the Thanksgiving break. Depending on the discipline, some face-to-face classes could require work to be submitted electronically after the break begins. In addition, some allied health and career education students could continue face-to-face classes, laboratories and clinicals through mid-December based on the curriculum for individual programs. “Since we began the fall semester, it has brought me great joy to have our locations filled with students once again,” said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen. “There is nothing more exciting than the sight and sounds of our students in classes and interacting with each other! Delta Health Alliance mobile unit to be at ICC-Fulton Thursday; those vaccinated or taking the shot during the event qualify for ICC scholarship drawing The Delta Health Alliance mobile unit will be on the Fulton Campus of Itawamba Community College at the entrance to Lambert Stadium from 3-7:30 p.m., Thursday (Sept. 16), to offer COVID-19 vaccinations. Participants will join those who have been vaccinated in an opportunity to be entered into a drawing for a $1,000 scholarship to ICC. Those who have received at least one shot should bring their vaccination cards to enter the drawing, which will be at halftime of the ICC-Coahoma game, which begins at 6:30 p.m., according to Tyler Camp, chief of staff and special assistant to the president. Registration underway at ICC for Basic Construction, HR Assistant pathways Registration is underway at Itawamba Community College for two Pathway programs that are scheduled to begin in October at the Belden Center (3200 Adams Farm Rd.). They are Basic Construction and Human Resource Assistant. Basic Construction, which will meet Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. from Oct. 18-29, includes construction math, power and hand tools, construction site safety, construction drawings, employability, communication skills and introduction to material handling. The Pathway to Employment in Construction program is a nationally-recognized certification for Construction Core designed by the National Center for Construction Education and Research.
