Registration continues for Gateway program Registration is continuing for the Gateway program at Itawamba Community College. The program is designed for individuals who are between the ages of 16-24, do not have a high school diploma or its equivalent, want career coaching and are serious about exploring employment opportunities. In addition, those who have a high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma may qualify if they have another type of barrier, including but not limited to, single parent, low income, disabilities and homeless. Enrollments are currently being accepted for participants Chickasaw, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe and Pontotoc counties. Open enrollment for classes in the one-week program begins Mondays at 9 a.m. at the ICC Belden Center (3200 Adams Farm Rd.). According to WIOA Youth Coordinator Sanders Bell, students can start on Monday and possibly have a job by Friday. ICC receives 2019 Halbrook award Itawamba Community College has received the 2019 John C. and Earnestine McCall Halbrook Improvement Award from the Mississippi Association of Colleges. The award, which was presented Oct. 1 at the conclusion of the association’s annual conference in Bay St. Louis, is presented to the single college or university that has shown the greatest increase over the previous year in the percentage of athletes graduating. ICC also won the award in 2013. “At ICC, we continue to strive to provide an educational foundation that allows our students to succeed and reach their maximum potential,” said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen. “This wouldn’t be possible without our outstanding faculty and coaches who make it a priority to excel both on the courts and fields as well as in the classroom.” “I am proud of the academic success of our student-athletes,” said Carrie Ball-Williamson, ICC director of athletics. “Hopefully we can continue improving the graduation rate of our athletes.” In addition, two ICC student-athletes received the David M. Art exhibit features the work of Tom and Sam Douglas This month, the Itawamba Community College art gallery is featuring an exhibition of the father and son team of Tom and Sam Douglas. The exhibit will run through Oct. 31 with a reception planned from 2-3 p.m. that day. The show titled “Tom and Sam for Max” is a collection of acrylic on board paintings and engraving prints by the artists respectively. Tom Douglas’s work, which focuses on personal, historical and religious narratives, comments on the interconnectedness of these elements. Likewise, Sam Douglas’s groupings of portraits explores connectedness by degrees of separation between people. The show is dedicated to Max Hochstetler, a former art teacher of Tom Douglas. Tom Douglas earned the Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Mississippi in 1983. He then joined the ICC faculty, becoming the art department chair and serving for 30 years (1983-2013). ICC seeks participants for Community Tailgate Itawamba Community College is seeking participants for its 2019 Community Tailgate, Oct. 10, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in front of Butch Lambert Stadium at the Fulton Campus. Businesses, alumni, teams, families, offices, community groups, student groups and organizations are invited to participate in the free opportunity, according to Nina Strother, director of community relations at ICC. This year, the tailgates and food will be separate competitions. Tailgate booths will be judged on atmosphere, creativity and spirit. Judging will begin at 5 p.m. The cook off will be divided into sweet and savory categories, and tailgate participants may submit one sweet and/or one savory dish to the cook off tent by 5 p.m. for judging. Winners will be selected for both categories as well as an overall grand champion. Participants must sign up by Oct. 4 for the rain or shine event. FAFSA Fridays to begin at ICC, Oct. 4 Itawamba Community College’s Financial Aid offices have scheduled FAFSA Fridays beginning Oct. 4 to assist prospective students with the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. ICC staff members will be available to assist with completion of the online form as well as to answer any questions at both the Fulton and Tupelo campus offices, which are located in the Student Services buildings. Students are encouraged to visit the Tupelo Campus office, if possible because of the availability of more computers. The FAFSA is the form used by the U.S. Department of Education to determine eligibility for federal, state and college-sponsored financial aid, including grants, educational loans and work-study programs, according to Terry Bland, director of Financial Aid at ICC. ICC to test Alert system, Oct. 2 Itawamba Community College has upgraded its ICC Alert emergency notification system, which sends important messages to students, faculty and staff on existing or imminent threats, such as inclement weather. A new technical support system has been implemented that will allow users to receive messages through multiple avenues, including a Smartphone app, SMS text messages, email and calls. The College has partnered with Everbridge, an industry leader in emergency messaging, to provide several enhancements to the ICC Alert system. Additional upgrades include faster delivery speeds, personalized weather notifications, community messaging and more. A system-wide test of the enhanced ICC Alert system is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2019, at 12:15 p.m. Text messages and phone calls will originate from the phone number, 662.862.8277. We request that students, faculty, and staff add that number to their phone contacts and name it ICC Alert. The Wednesday test is expected to conclude by 12:30 p.m. Additionally, the notifications will request recipients to confirm that they have received the test alert. ICC to honor Tom Childs, Butch Jones, Pernell McPhee, Oct. 3 Itawamba Community College will honor Alumnus of the Year Tom Childs of Fulton and Athletic Hall of Fame inductees Butch Jones of Fulton and Pernell McPhee of Pahokee, Fla., during Homecoming activities, Oct. 3, at the Fulton Campus. They will be recognized at an award ceremony at 4 p.m. at the Davis Event Center lobby as well as prior to the ICC vs. Holmes football game which begins at 6:30 p.m. at Eaton Field. Childs is a retired Fulton attorney, who taught both American and state government, accounting, business law and real estate law at IJC/ICC and served as a former assistant football coach and offensive coordinator for the 1971 Itawamba Indians. BancorpSouth supports ICC's high school equivalency program BancorpSouth Bank (NYSE: BXS) is committed to its communities. The bank recently donated $3,000 to Itawamba Community College’s high school equivalency program. The adult education/basic skills program, formerly known as the GED program, enables students—ages 16 and older—to complete a high school equivalency diploma through classes offered in the college’s five-county district, which includes Chickasaw, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe and Pontotoc counties. “We are grateful for this significant donation from BancorpSouth,” said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen. “None of the work we do would be possible without the generous support of individuals and companies, like BancorpSouth, that believe in the mission of Itawamba Community College and our communities as a whole.” ICC received the donation from BancorpSouth on Aug. 20, when Allen was invited to speak to community leaders about the college’s work with students enrolled in the adult education/basic skills program.
