Five ICC students selected as NASA Space Grant Scholarship recipients

            Five Itawamba Community College students have been selected as the recipients of $500 NASA Space Grant Scholarships.

            They include McKinley Paige Dean of Aberdeen; Jacob Clinton of Guntown; Haley Dean, Austin Sanders and Emma Cate Sparks, all of Saltillo.

            The NASA Space Grant scholarship program supports the advancement of academically-focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics and engineering, mathematics and science/mathematics education.

            Clinton is an aerospace engineering – aeronautics major at ICC, where he is a member of the Indian Delegation, Student Government Association representative for Lee County, Phi Theta Kappa officer, member of the Baptist Student Union Lead Team – Bible Study Leader, regular attendee at the Wesley Foundation and STEM student. He plans to transfer to Mississippi State University where he will be part of the co-op program to benefit from hands-on experience for his major as well as a resident adviser for MSU housing. He is the son of Rebecca Duffie and Ashley Clinton.

            Haley Dean is majoring in mechanical engineering at ICC, where she is the vice president of scholarship for the Phi Theta Kappa Upsilon Sigma Chapter; member of the Honors College, Baptist Student Union, Science Club and Indian Delegation; president of the Student Government Association and a previous Orientation Leader. Dean is also a Supplemental Instructor and a student worker in the Telecommunications and Information Services Department. Along with her team, she was named a finalist in the Community College Innovation Challenge sponsored by the American Association of Community Colleges and National Science Foundation. She is a recipient of the STEM Summer Internship with Brown University, Mississippi All-Academic Team, ICC Hall of Fame and Miss ICC. Dean has been on the ICC President’s List every semester. She attends Harrisburg Baptist Church. After graduating from ICC in May, she plans to transfer to Mississippi State University. Her parents are Leslie and Gary Dean.

            McKinley Dean is a member of the Wesley Foundation at ICC where she will graduate in May. She will transfer to Mississippi State University to complete her degree in broadcast meteorology. Her parents are Derrick and Tiffany Dean.

            Sanders, who is a President’s List scholar,  is majoring in mechanical engineering at ICC, where his activities have included member of Phi Theta Kappa, the Science Club, Baptist Student Union and the Honors College. He is also a student worker in the library. Sanders attends Bethany Baptist Church in Saltillo. After ICC, he plans to transfer to Mississippi State University. He is the son of Craig and Patty Sanders.

            Sparks, who is majoring in biological sciences, will transfer to Mississippi State University this fall. She plans to pursue a graduate degree in occupational therapy. At ICC, Sparks is a member of the Indian Delegation, Phi Theta Kappa and Pom Squad/Indianette; an Orientation Leader and vice president of the Student Government Association. She is the daughter of Bert and Meisha Sparks.
