Itawamba Community College to Host Chickasaw Nation Cultural Events on November 5 Itawamba Community College will host a pair of cultural events featuring representatives of the Chickasaw Nation on both its Fulton and Tupelo campuses on November 5. The events, which are open to the public, are designed to provide students and community members with an opportunity to engage with and learn about Chickasaw culture, language and history. On the Tupelo Campus, the Chickasaw Nation will host a Language Learning Table from 12:30-1:30 p.m. followed by a traditional Chickasaw story presentation at 1:30 p.m. The events will take place in the cafeteria of the Academic and Student Center. At the same time, on the Fulton Campus, attendees can visit a Cultural Learning Table beginning at 12:30 p.m., followed by a presentation at 1:30 p.m. by local author and historian Mitch Caver in the Fulton Campus Library. Caver, a retired Branch Director with the Mississippi Department of Transportation, has dedicated much of his post-retirement work to researching and preserving Chickasaw history. ICC hosts Job Fair, Nov. 11, at Belden Center Itawamba Community College is hosting a Job Fair in room 509 of the Belden Conference Center (3200 Adams Farm Rd.), Nov. 11, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Participating companies, which will be available to discuss potential job opportunities, include Advanced Technology Services, APMM, Blue Springs Metals, Central Service Association, CEW, Franklin Furniture, Homestretch, International Paper, Itawamba Community College, Magnum Metals, North Mississippi Health Services, Omega Motion, Raybern Foods, Renin, Toyota and Winchester. ICC to host Emerging Scholars Luncheon, Nov. 2 High school seniors with a 24+ ACT score will be honored during Itawamba Community College’s Emerging Scholars Luncheon, which begins at 11 a.m., Nov. 2, at the Davis Event Center at the Fulton Campus. “The event is an opportunity for the select group of high school seniors to learn more about the academic and involvement opportunities for honor students at ICC,” said Michael Holloway, director of recruitment and orientation. The schedule includes check in from 10:45-11 a.m. followed by lunch and sessions focusing on the accelerated academic experience, Phi Theta Kappa and Honors College, special guest speaker ICC alumnus Karis Pannell and a question-and-answer session by a student leaders panel. Tours of the honors residence hall and campus are available. Holloway said that during the accelerated academic experience, participants can explore ICC’s 10 schools of academics with up to three round table discussions with faculty. “Participants can learn more about a variety of opportunities including scholarships and Honors College,” Holloway said. “Current student leaders will share information about how to balance academic life and involvement.” For more information ... ICC pathway programs set to begin in November Registration is underway at the Itawamba Community College Belden Center for several pathway programs that are scheduled to begin in November. They include Basic Construction, Certified Nursing Assistant, Commercial Truck Driving and Food Service Pathway. The Basic Construction class will meet Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. from Nov. 9-20. It is a nationally-recognized certification for Construction Core designed by the National Center for Construction Education and Research. The curriculum includes construction math, power and hand tools, construction site safety, construction drawings, employability, communication skills and introduction to material handling. Successful participants who pass the NCCER examination will be eligible for entry-level construction jobs. Certified Nursing Assistant will meet Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. from Nov. 2-17. The program prepares participants to take the exam to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. Upon successful program and examination completion, employment could be available in nursing homes, medical centers, home healthcare providers and clinics. Commercial Truck Driving begins Nov. 16 and will meet Monday through Friday from 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. through Dec. 18. ... ICC formally opens newly-renovated Student Activities Center at the Fulton Campus Itawamba Community College reopened its Student Activities Center with a formal ribbon cutting ceremony, Aug. 14, at the Fulton Campus. “It is with great pride and excitement that we gather to celebrate the opening of the newly renovated Student Activities Center,” said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen. “Just as with our recent residence hall ribbon cuttings at Monroe and Sheffield Halls, this is not just a physical transformation but a renewal of our commitment to providing a vibrant and supportive campus environment for our students.” ICC’s approximately 13,000-square-foot Student Activities Center, which opened in 1961 and the oldest building on the Fulton Campus, has had numerous facelifts over the years, but this renovation touched every aspect of the building, including a completely redesigned interior to maximize open space for seating and the addition of a new covered space on the back to provide students a place to dine in the event of inclement weather.
