General 0 Alicia King Thornton of Tupelo, Surgical Technology program director at Itawamba Community College, has been selected as a member of the board of directors for the Mississippi Association of Surgical Technology for a two-year term. A native of Verona, Thornton is a graduate of Shannon High School and ICC (Associate of Arts degree). She was accepted into the Surgical Technology program in the summer of 2012 and earned the Associate of Applied Sciences degree in 2013. Her additional education background includes certification as Surgical First Assistant (training with Baptist Hospital) and the Bachelor of Health Science degree from the University of Mississippi. Her employment history includes Baptist Golden Triangle in Columbus and East Mississippi Community College (Surgical Technology program director). Thornton rejoined the ICC family in 2022 in her current position. Additional memberships include the Association of Surgical Technology, Association of Surgical Assistants and First Baptist Missionary Baptist Church in Aberdeen. She and her husband, Jirmychael, have two sons, Asher, 2; and Ashten, 5 months. The Association of Surgical Technologists was established in 1969 by members of the American College of Surgeons. Today, surgical technologists are working in one of the fastest-growing professions in the country. As the oldest and most widely-recognized professional organizations for surgical technologists, AST’s primary purpose is to ensure that surgical technologists have the knowledge and skills to administer patient care of the highest quality. ICC Foundation Board adds three new members Three new members have been elected to the board of directors of the Itawamba Community College Foundation, Inc. They include Brad Stevens of Smithville; Lee Tucker of Tupelo; and Liz Weseli of Amory. Stevens serves as Regional Executive Officer/Business Development for Community Bank of Mississippi and current director for its board of directors. His previous positions include division president, executive vice president and senior vice president, all with Community Bank of North Mississippi; and vice president, assistant vice president/loan officer and internal auditor, Security Bank of Amory. Stevens, an honor graduate of Smithville High School, earned the associate’s degree from ICC where he was a member of the Hall of Fame and Student Body president; and the bachelor’s degree from Mississippi State University. He is also a graduate of both the Louisiana State University and Mississippi State University Schools of Banking. ICC's Bowers selected as Transfer Partner Representative for PTK Regional Advisory Board Jenny Bowers of Tupelo, English instructor at Itawamba Community College, has been selected as Transfer Partner Representative of the Phi Theta Kappa Mississippi/Louisiana Regional Advisory Board for 2023-25. “Serving on the advisory board helps our region and our students as we plan events and help train regional officers,” Bowers said. In her new position, Bowers will liaise with universities to help make transferring seamless for PTK students. The Advisory Board works with regional coordinators to plan events for the Mississippi/Louisiana region of PTK. Upcoming events include the Regional Honors Institute in Meridian, June 19-21, and the Regional Leadership Conference hosted by Delgado Community College in New Orleans, Sept. 7-8. Bowers joined the ICC faculty in 2002 as an adjunct instructor and became full-time in 2011. Also, she has served as Writing Center consultant and director. She earned both the bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Mississippi State University. ICC's Allen named to prestigious AACC Board Itawamba Community College President Dr. Jay Allen has been named to the American Association of Community College Board of Directors for a three-year term. He is one of two Mississippi community college presidents serving on the prestigious board, which acts on behalf of the institutional members to create and maintain a vision for AACC, provide a national voice and advocacy for the community college mission and to determine and ensure that the organization adheres to appropriate standards of performance. A total of 32 presidents serve on the Board. Allen is an affiliate council representative and board member for the Community Colleges of Appalachia, which serves the common interests of colleges and their communities through programs and services responsive to the unique cultural, geographic and economic development challenges facing the region. Dr. Mary Graham of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College is serving on the AACC Board as well. ICC's Mask, Butler selected as '23 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholars Emma Mask of Plantersville and Matthew Butler of Tupelo, sophomores at Itawamba Community College, have been selected as 2023 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholars and will each receive a $1,000 scholarship. The Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship Program helps new Phi Theta Kappa members defray educational expenses while enrolled in associate degree programs. Scholars are encouraged to assume leadership roles by participating in Society programs and are selected based on scholastic achievement, community service and leadership potential. Nearly 1,100 applications were received. Mask, a sophomore at ICC, is majoring in secondary math education. Her ICC activities and honors include Phi Theta Kappa president, Honors College, Instructional Support team leader, Fashion Tribe social executive, pom dancer, Indianette dancer, Trading Post committee, Indian Delegation social executive, STEM Club, Educators Rising and Mirror staff. ICC's Matthew Butler one of eight PTK members nationwide to receive prestigious scholarship Matthew L. Butler of Tupelo, a student at Itawamba Community College, is one of eight Phi Theta Kappa members selected as a 2024 Guistwhite Scholar and will receive a $5,000 scholarship for baccalaureate studies. Butler, who is a biochemistry major, is participating in the Middle College program. He will graduate from both Tupelo High School and ICC in May. His ICC activities include vice president of Scholarship for the Upsilon Sigma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, Instructional Support team member, 22-23 Monroe County Representative for the Tupelo Student Government Association, STEM Club president, Exam Cram tutor and member of the Humanities Club. His honors include president’s list and recipient of the PTK Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise scholarship in 2023. His civic activities include Time for Tupelo, among other local community service events and tutoring. At Tupelo High School, his activities and honors are Science Olympiad, ACT 30+ Club, Poetry Out Load State Finalist and National Rural and Small-Town Recognition program.
