General 0 Itawamba Community College will host a MI-BEST open house from 4-7 p.m., Oct. 16, at the Belden Conference Center (3200 Adams Farm Rd.). The MI-BEST program enables students to earn certifications and college credits while they are working on earning the high school equivalency credential. Information will also be available on ICC’s MI-BEST pathway opportunities in Certified Nursing Assistant, Welding and Cutting Technology and Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Technology. “We hope to recruit MI-BEST students, bring awareness to the community and recruit students who can enroll into our adult education classes,” said Amanda Jane, adult education program coordinator and trainer. Among the schools, Itawamba Community College was selected from a competitive pool of applicants to receive $100,000 to transform the futures of students in the community. “It is a tremendous honor for Itawamba Community College to be selected as one of the recipients of the prestigious All Within My Hands grant, which will significantly impact our career education programs, providing funding for students to pursue a pathway and their best start,” said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen. “It is another indication of the success of the College and reinforcement of the mission that students and their success are our top priority.” The Metallica Scholars Initiative (MSI) was launched in 2019 by Metallica’s foundation, All Within My Hands (AWMH), in partnership with the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). ICC schedules open houses at Fulton, Belden Open houses and formal openings for two facilities will be at Itawamba Community College next week. They include the band hall/safe shelter at the Fulton Campus at 4:30 p.m., Oct. 16, and the Precision Manufacturing/Robotics laboratory at the Belden Center at 2 p.m., Oct. 18. The Federal Emergency Management Agency provided $3.5 million in hazard mitigation funding to build the multipurpose hazardous weather safe room. The 13,585-square-foot facility has the capacity to protect 2,319 students, faculty and staff from wind speeds up to 250 miles per hour. The total cost of the project is $5.77 million. At the Belden Center, the Appalachian Regional Commission grant made possible the renovation of 21,000 square feet of space to install precision manufacturing and machining and robotics laboratories to consolidate the related training programs into one facility. The investment enables ICC to improve the workforce readiness of its students, ensuring a continuing supply of workers for manufacturers. The public is invited to both events. ICC celebrates relocation of Aberdeen adult education class with open house Itawamba Community College celebrated the relocation of its Aberdeen adult education classes with an open house, Nov. 14. Aberdeen Mayor Charles Scott expressed appreciation to Teresa Reid, owner of the Aspire Group, the new location, for providing building space and computers for the adult education class. He said that the partnership will provide more opportunities for the people of Aberdeen. Monroe County Sheriff Kevin Crook agreed, saying he is “very interested in the program, especially providing opportunities for inmates.” “The transition to this center not only creates but expands partnerships, providing another location in Monroe County,” said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen. ICC pathway programs set to begin in October Registration is underway at the Itawamba Community College Belden Center for several pathway programs that are scheduled to begin in October. They include Certified Nursing Assistant (two classes), Commercial Truck Driving, Food Service Pathway, Manufacturing Skills Basic Certification, Basic Construction and Quality Improvement Associate. Certified Nursing Assistant will meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 5-9 p.m. Oct. 12-Dec. 16, and the day class will meet Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Oct. 12-27. The program prepares participants to take the exam to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. Upon successful program and examination completion, employment could be available in nursing homes, medical centers, home healthcare providers and clinics. Commercial Truck Driving begins Oct. 12 and will meet Monday through Friday from 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. through Nov. 6. The program prepares individuals to drive Class A semi trucks and other commercial vehicles. It includes instruction in operating diesel-powered vehicles, loading and unloading cargo, reporting delays or accidents on the road, verifying loads against shipping records and keeping necessary records. Both online and face-to-face options are available. Students who meet eligibility requirements may qualify for tuition assistance. They include Electrician Assistant, a face-to-face class offered at the Belden Center. It begins Oct. 19, will meet from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, through Nov. 9. The program provides the foundational knowledge of basic math and safety rules; the use of hand, measuring and power tools; basic electricity and residential wiring. ICC formally reopens Monroe, Sheffield Halls during July 30 ceremonies Itawamba Community College formally reopened both Monroe and Sheffield Halls during two ribbon-cutting ceremonies at the Fulton Campus today (July 30). In two weeks, residents will move into Monroe’s now single-occupancy rooms and benefit from the first of a two-phase renovation of Sheffield Hall. “This morning, we are standing in front of one of our oldest residential facilities, Monroe Hall,” said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen. “This building, which consisted of our smallest rooms, housed two students per room. With the complete renovation of this hall, we are now able to offer single occupancy rooms with a shared bathroom for every two rooms. Each floor is customizable to house separated males and females under the same roof, just like Magnolia Hall.” The $2.2 million renovation of Monroe Hall, which first opened in 1968, was designed with students’ needs and aspirations in mind, Allen said. “The upgraded facilities provide modern amenities, increased comfort and spaces that foster community and collaboration.
