May 30 deadline for ICC selective admission programs

May 30 is the deadline for application for four selective admission programs at Itawamba Community College.             They include Electrical, Industrial Maintenance, Robotics and Automation and Welding. All are taught at the ICC Belden Center (3200 Adams Farm Road).             Selective admission programs, which have a limited number of openings each year, have specific entry-level requirements that must be met before selection for admission to the program. ICC Associate Degree Nursing faculty, students win state awards

            Itawamba Community College’s faculty and students won prestigious awards at the Mississippi Organization for Associate Degree Nursing conference recently in Biloxi.             ICC’s students won the College Bowl, which consisted of correct responses to NCLEX-RN questions, over opponent teams from nine other community Colleges. Members include Tiree Jones of Aberdeen, Alexis Derrick of Ecru, Kaci Wood of Mantachie and Alexis Koonce of Saltillo.             Of the three faculty awards presented this year, ICC brought home two. Anna Lewis of Mantachie won the Professional Development Award, which was established by the MOADN Board of Directors to support the professional development efforts of associate degree nurse educators. Criteria include employment by an accredited ADN program in Mississippi, membership in MOADN either as an individual or program member and willingness to present the professional development activity at the next annual convention. ICC team, only one from Mississippi, to compete in final round of Community College Innovation Challenge

            Itawamba Community College is among the 12 teams and the only one from Mississippi that will participate in the final round of the Community College Innovation Challenge set for June in Washington, D.C. Sponsors are the American Association of Community Colleges in partnership with the National Science Foundation.             “ICC’s project is ViruShield: Next-Generation Care for HIV Patients. ViruShield is a subcutaneous pump that tests for HIV viral loads and administers doses of medication to an HIV-positive patient to help with the prevention of AIDS and to increase treatment compliance within this minority community,” according to Heather McCormick of Fulton, ICC mathematics division chair and team mentor. “Normally, a multitude of drug combinations are used along with a treatment schedule of daily pills and then monthly injections to keep HIV at an undetectable level.”             The team includes Cortney McCord, Shaan Nagra, both of Saltillo; Jillian Babb and Matthew Butler of Tupelo. “I’m so proud of these students, their innovation and their hard work,” McCormick said. “Despite the busyness of the semester, they worked together ...

ICC Food Service Management Certification class set to begin May 13

Registration is underway for a Food Management Certification class that will begin May 13 at the Itawamba Community College Belden Center.                 The class will meet Monday-Thursday from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. through June 6.                 Highlights of the hands-on course include both ServSafe® Food Manager and Alcohol Certification, menu planning/preparation, assistance/participation in execution of catered events, résumé/interview skills and both front- and back-of-the-house operations.                 Tuition assistance could be available for those who qualify.                 For more information or to register, call Christy Scheuer, instructor, at (662) 407-1505 or email acscheuer@iccms.edu or pathways@iccms.edu.

ICC students win state creative writing awards

Several Itawamba Community College students recently received awards from the Mississippi Community College Creative Writing Association for their work.             They include Blake Lyon of Smithville, first place in Drama for “Happy Anniversary;” Luke Nichols of Tupelo, second place in Drama for “AD&D 5e Story – Chapter 1;” and Tyrianna Brooks of Okolona, honorable mention in Short Story for “Don’t Go.” In addition, ICC’s literary magazine, The Calliope, placed first.  Editors are Shawn Whittington of Saltillo, art; and English instructor Keith Morris of Tupelo, poetry.             State-level winners received certificates and a copy of Writer, which publishes the student winners. Statewide first and second place winners received monetary prizes of $100 and $60 respectively.

ICC schedules 2024 commencement ceremonies

Approximately 1,000 Itawamba Community College graduates will participate in three commencement ceremonies at the Davis Event Center on the Fulton Campus, May 10.             They include 10 a.m., Associate of Arts degrees, last name A-K and Middle College; 2 p.m., Associate of Arts degrees, last name L-Z; and 5 p.m., Associate of Applied Science degrees and certificates for Career Education and Health Science programs.             Mississippi Speaker of the House Jason White will deliver the keynote address for the 10 a.m. ceremony.             An adult education commencement ceremony is scheduled for 6 p.m., May 9, also at the Davis Event Center.             The public is invited to attend all ceremonies.

Miss. Speaker of the House Jason White to deliver keynote address at ICC 10 a.m. commencement ceremony, May 10

Mississippi Representative Jason White will be the speaker for Itawamba Community College’s 10 a.m. commencement ceremony, May 10, at the Davis Event Center on the Fulton Campus.             In January, White was elected as Mississippi’s 62nd Speaker of the House. The Kosciusko native began his service in the Mississippi House of Representatives, District 48, which consists of portions of Attala, Carroll, Holmes and Leake counties, in August 2011. Following re-election in 2016, he was named Rules Chairman and elected Republican Floor Leader by the Republican Caucus. In 2020, his Mississippi House colleagues elected him Speaker Pro Tempore, and his fellow Republicans elected him Republican Caucus Chairman.             White, who is also the City Attorney for Kosciusko, represents a number of governmental entities and utility boards and providers. His previous service includes former Municipal Court Judge and Youth Court Judge and Board of Aldermen for the Town of West. ICC sets Small Business Showcase during May

Itawamba Community College’s Continuing Education Department is offering a Small Business Showcase series that will begin May 2 at 6 p.m. at the Belden Center and will feature Fulton’s Square Gift Co. During the Trucker Hat Bar, participants will have the opportunity to create custom design trucker hats during the two-hour session. The cost is $30, and additional patches can be purchased.             Additional sessions include candle making, Humble Roots Candle Company, May 16 from 6-8 p.m. at the ICC Belden Center; and a do-it-yourself wood sign workshop by Board and Brush at its location, 3944 North Gloster, Tupelo, May 24, 6-8 p.m. Both sessions are $35 each.             “The program was initiated to create partnerships with area local businesses and to begin during Small Business Month, which is May,” said Josh Gammill, ICC Continuing Education director. “One of our goals is not only to invest in our small businesses, but also in our communities.
