ICC to celebrate success of high school equivalency diploma recipients, Feb. 13

Nominations open for 2024 ICC Alumni honorees

Nominations are being accepted through Apr. 1 for Itawamba Community College’s 2024 Alumnus of the Year, Athletic Hall of Fame, ICC Distinguished Service Award and Young Alumnus of the Year. Those selected will be honored during homecoming activities this fall at the Fulton Campus. Criteria for selection for Alumnus of the Year include successful completion of at least one semester as a full-time student at ICC five years prior to the current year as well as merit and achievement which have brought fame and honor to either his/her community or ICC. ICC’s Athletic Hall of Fame honors former athletes, coaches or individuals who have excelled or made major contributions to intercollegiate athletics while attending or employed by ICC. They must have been out of school at least 10 years. Accomplishments and support of ICC also may be considered. The Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to ICC, is open to an individual, group or organization that has made substantial, outstanding and consistent contribution to the college through tangible or intangible gifts or deeds. ICC Food Service Management Certification class to begin Jan. 22

            Registration is underway for a Food Management Certification class that will begin January 22 at the Itawamba Community College Belden Center.             The class will meet Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. through February 16.             Highlights of the hands-on course include both ServSafe® Food Manager and Alcohol Certification, menu planning/preparation, assistance/participation in execution of catered events, résumé/interview skills and both front- and back-of-the-house operations.             Tuition assistance could be available for those who qualify.             For more information or to register, call Christy Scheuer, instructor, at (662) 407-1505 or email acscheuer@iccms.edu or pathways@iccms.edu.

Registration underway at ICC for three career pathway programs to begin Jan. 30 at Belden Center

            Registration is underway at Itawamba Community College for three career pathway programs that will begin January 30 at the Belden Center.             They include Electrician Assistant, Small Engine Repair and Introduction to Welding and Cutting.             Electrician Assistant will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9 p.m. through Feb. 29. The program prepares individuals to work closely with their supervising electrician to perform routine electrical work. It provides the foundational knowledge of basic math and basic safety rules; the use of hand, measuring and power tools; basic electricity and residential wiring. Students can also prepare for entry-level jobs in industry or private businesses. Cost is $370.             In the 16-session Small Engine Repair pathway, students prepare for a career as they develop skills in basic maintenance, recoil systems, fuel systems, ignition systems/electrical circuits and disassembling and rebuilding small engines. Classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays through March 28 from 6-9 p.m. Those who successfully complete the program are prepared for entry-level technician positions at an existing small engine repair business or potentially opening their own shop.             More than 50 contestants will compete for the title of Itawamba Community College’s Most Beautiful 2024, Feb. 15 at 6 p.m. at the W.O. ICC's Kyle Davis selected as William Winter Scholar for 2024

Kyle Davis of Fulton, choir director/music instructor, has been selected as Itawamba Community College’s William Winter Scholar for 2024.             He will be among statewide recipients honored during opening and closing ceremonies at the 35th Natchez Literary and Cinema Celebration, Feb. 22-24.             Davis joined the ICC family in fall 2018. Before his appointment, he served as the music director, vocal coach and instructor for the University of Alabama’s Department of Theatre and Dance.             He earned the bachelor’s degree from Blue Mountain Christian University and the master’s degree from the University of Mississippi and is scheduled to receive the doctoral degree from William Carey University this summer.              Davis’s honors and awards include the Ed Ludlow Alumni Award for Servant Leadership in Music, Linda Berry Music Award and Purser Speech Award, all from Blue Mountain Christian University; the Outstanding Faculty Award from Alpha Psi Omega at the University of Alabama; Target Award for Most Outstanding Teacher in the South Tippah County School District; and the Most Outstanding Graduate Singer Award and Most Outstanding Opera Singer Award from the University of ...

ICC's Griffith to present "Music: A Uniquely Human Experience," Feb. 6

            Christy Colburn Griffith of Amory, recipient of Itawamba Community College’s Mississippi Humanities Teacher Award for 2024, will present “Music: A Uniquely Human Experience,” Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. in the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium at the Fulton Campus.             “Music does more than just make sounds,” Griffith said. “It changes the way people think and behave. The skills learned in music will help students be successful on the stage, in the classroom and for the rest of their lives. Music is a human experience, and it plays an important role in educating the entire person.”             Griffith will be among those honored at the Mississippi Humanities Council Awards Ceremony in March at the Two Mississippi Museums in Jackson. Rosalyn Montgomery earns high school equivalency diploma at ICC at the age of 68

          The educational journey of Rosalyn Montgomery of Plantersville took a bit longer than she expected. In fact, she just earned her high school equivalency diploma at Itawamba Community College at the age of 68, less than a month after her birthday.             She passed the GED test on the first try as a result of her enrolling in an adult education class at the ICC Belden Center. “I wanted to complete something I started. I wanted to be a role model and show people that if you put in the time and work, you will be victorious,” she emphasized. “They had the tools I needed to be successful, and they had the teachers the Lord put here to help.”             Montgomery dropped out of school when she was 12 to help at home. She cleaned, cooked and “kept out of trouble,” she said. When she was 18, she left home to work at Long’s Laundry. Later, she welded fans and guards. ICC offers innovative Senior College beginning Jan. 16 at Belden Center

       Itawamba Community College has an answer for those who are retired and looking for something fun to do.             Its innovative Senior College will begin Jan. 16 at 9 a.m. with Jack Reed Jr. hosting the kickoff. He will share excerpts from his recently released book, “A Time to Listen,” which includes the best of thoughts collected from theologians, ministers, teachers and inspirational role models and have become the building blocks of the architecture of his own theology and philosophy.             “With ICC’s new Senior College, we wanted to offer something that will appeal to the diverse interests of people living in retirement,” said Josh Gammill, director of Continuing Education. “The sessions will offer wonderful opportunities for community members to learn more about topics specific to our area, stay active in the community and engage with other participants who share the same enthusiasm and zest for life and learning as they do.”             Additional programs include Feb. 20, Chair Yoga; Mar. 20, Clark Richey with the Claude Gentry Theatre in Baldwyn and lunch at Tom’s Soda Shop (transportation provided); ...

New Medical Assistant class to begin Jan. 22 at ICC Belden Center

           Registration is underway at Itawamba Community College for a Medical Assistant class that will begin Jan. 22 at the Belden Center.             The class will meet Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9 p.m. through May 16.             The comprehensive program is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills and practical experience necessary to thrive as a medical assistant in the dynamic field of healthcare. As an essential member of a healthcare team, medical assistants play a crucial role in ensuring the efficient operation of medical offices, clinics and other healthcare settings.
