General 0 Itawamba Community College’s Student Government Associations have scheduled Black History Month: Celebration of Unity programs at both the Fulton and Tupelo campuses. The Tupelo Campus program will be at 12:15 p.m., Feb. 16, in the Student Affairs presentation room of the Student Support Center, and the Fulton Campus event will be at 7 p.m., Feb. 21, at the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium. Mack-Arthur Turner, a native of Tupelo and a recent graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Law will be the speaker for the Tupelo Campus program. He began his academic career at ICC, where he received his GED certificate. Turner then enrolled as a full-time student and earned his associate’s degree in English with special honors. During his time at ICC, Turner served as president of the Student Government Association and Phi Theta Kappa. He contributed to the Chieftain staff, both as a journalist and a photographer. He also had the honor of speaking at the Mississippi State Capitol on behalf of all 15 community and junior colleges. Following his graduation from ICC, Turner enrolled at the University of Mississippi where he became a student in its Sally McDonnell Honors College. At Ole Miss, he served as a senator in its Associated Student Body. In his last year of undergraduate studies, Turner traveled to Quito, Ecuador to study advanced Spanish at the University of San Francisco. He is currently preparing to take the state Bar exam. The Fulton Campus speaker is Larry Harmon of Tupelo, who is director of transportation for the Tupelo Public School District. His background has included 35 years in education, 20 as a coach and 15 as an administrator. Harmon is a 1976 graduate of Kosciusko High School. He earned the bachelor’s degree from Valley State University and the master’s degree from the University of Mississippi. Harmon’s record as baseball coach at Tupelo High School was 509-144. His teams won three state championships, two runners-up and 18 division championships. Harmon is married to the former Sharon Collier. They have one son, Nicholas, who is a junior at Tupelo High School. He is a member of White Hill Missionary Baptist Church. Both programs are free and open to the public. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium. Juanita Floyd, vice president of finance and administration for the CREATE Foundation and co-author of “Summer of 1969,” will be the speaker for both programs. She has been employed with the Foundation for almost 35 years. The Foundation established the Bernice Gambrell Endowment Fund in the amount of $10,000 to honor both Floyd on her 20th anniversary as well as her mother. She is active in community affairs, serving on several boards. Floyd was the Tupelo PTO President and was selected “Parent of the Year” in 2008. In August 2019, she was selected as one of Mississippi’s Most Influential African Americans. Her additional honors include Tupelo Trailblazer of the Year, and in 2016, she was the focus of a WTVA ... Itawamba Community College receives $100,000 and joins 41 other schools across the US as All Within My Hands' Metallica Scholars Initiative expands in year five Metallica’s foundation, All Within My Hands, continues its multimillion-dollar investment in critical workforce programs at community colleges nationwide. Among the schools, Itawamba Community College was selected from a competitive pool of applicants to receive $100,000 to transform the futures of students in the community. “It is a tremendous honor for Itawamba Community College to be selected as one of the recipients of the prestigious All Within My Hands grant, which will significantly impact our career education programs, providing funding for students to pursue a pathway and their best start,” said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen. “It is another indication of the success of the College and reinforcement of the mission that students and their success are our top priority.” The Metallica Scholars Initiative (MSI) was launched in 2019 by Metallica’s foundation, All Within My Hands (AWMH), in partnership with the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). Amory native Hozay Hausley will be the speaker for the Fulton Campus event and will perform with ICC’s Gospel Sounds. He is president and vice president of Renasant Bank in Aberdeen, where he has been employed for 17 years. He earned the associate’s degree from Itawamba Community College and the bachelor’s degree from Mississippi University for Women and is a graduate of four banking schools. Among his community memberships are the Monroe County Industry Board executive committee, Amory Gilmore Regional Hospital Board, Mcfarland Foundation committee and Monroe County Chamber of Commerce. Hausley has served as a pageant judge for more than 20 years in Mississippi, Tennessee and Alabama. A motivational speaker, he released his new business, Hausley’s Inspirations LLC, in March 2011. Alum Bishop Alexander to speak at ICC's Unity programs at Fulton, Tupelo Itawamba Community College alumnus Bishop Alexander, who is the director of Alumni Relations at the University of North Alabama, will be the featured speaker for Unity programs in Celebration of Black History Month, Feb. 24, at both the Fulton and Tupelo campuses. The Tupelo Campus program is scheduled for 1 p.m. in the Dining Hall of the Academic and Student Center, and the Fulton Campus program, 6 p.m. in the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium. Due to COVID-19 restrictions on seating, the general public is invited to participate via ZOOM. ICC collaboration provides opportunity for financial assistance for five short-term training programs Students who enroll in five short-term training programs at Itawamba Community College could have the opportunity for financial assistance through Upskill Mid-South, which is a collaboration with the Three Rivers Planning and Development District and the University of Memphis. The programs include Commercial Truck Driving, Electrician Assistant, Google IT, Residential Carpentry Assistant and Welding, according to Josh Gammill, director of Continuing Education. “Upskill Mid-South has introduced the new initiative to provide targeted training programs aimed at supporting unemployed and underemployed individuals across a 42-county tristate region,” Gammill noted. The program is designed to address critical workforce needs. Among the Mississippi counties include Alcorn, Benton, DeSoto, Lafayette, Lee, Marshall, Panola, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Tate, Tippah, Tishomingo, Tunica and Union. “The Itawamba Community College, the University of Memphis and UpSkill Mid-South Partnership offers accelerated job training and education programs to people in the community as well as help finding a job,” said Diane Pabich, director, University of Memphis, Upskill Mid-South program. “Our programs help individuals develop and refine skills that are highly valued in today’s workplace. Price to be featured speaker for ICC's Unity programs, Feb. 16 Dr. Richard Price of Tupelo, senior minister of the North Green Street Church of Christ, will be the featured speaker for Unity programs in Celebration of Black History Month, Feb. 16, at both the Fulton and Tupelo campuses of Itawamba Community College. The Tupelo Campus program is scheduled for 12:15 p.m. in the Dining Hall of the Academic and Student Center; and the Fulton Campus program, 6 p.m. in the banquet rooms of the David C. Cole Student Services Building. Price has also served congregations in Philadelphia, Pa. and Harlem, NY. He has taught at the College of New Rochelle Brooklyn and Harlem campuses in areas of social science. He earned the bachelor’s degree from Livingstone, master’s degree from St. John’s University and the M.A.R.L.A. and D. Min. from New York Theological Seminary. He is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in higher education and administration from the University of Southern Mississippi.
