Five sophomores named to All-Mississippi Academic Team

            Five Itawamba Community College sophomores have been named to the All-Mississippi Academic Team.

            They include Matthew Burrows of Mantachie; Devin Bennett of Sherman; Makaela Dickerson of Smithville; Gregory Parker Anderson and Karlee Avery, both of Tupelo.

            Anderson is vice president of the Computer Programming and Networking Association at ICC. His honors include dean’s list. He is majoring in Computer Programming Technology. Anderson’s other activities include bass guitar player at his church. He is the son of Brenda Anderson and Larry Anderson.

            Avery is a general studies/pre-nursing major at ICC where she is a member of the Indian Delegation and co-vice president of service for the Beta Tau Sigma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. Her other activities include small group leader for seventh grade girls and supervises three-year-olds at The Orchard where she will be an intern this summer. She is the daughter of Jimmy and Joy Avery.

            Bennett is majoring in business administration at ICC where he is president of the Tupelo Campus Student Government Association and vice president of leadership of the Beta Tau Sigma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. His honors include both president’s and dean’s lists. Bennett is also drummer for the praise band at Macedonia Baptist Church. He is the son of David and Pam Bennett.

            Burrows is a member of the Indian Delegation, Baptist Student Union and Honors Program, Upsilon Sigma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa officer, LIN Report producer and orientation leader at ICC, where he is majoring in secondary education – social studies. His honors include president’s list and recipient of the Political Science award.  Burrows’ other activities are coach of the Dorsey Attendance Center’s Scholars’ Bowl team and usher at Morning View Baptist Church. He is the son of Chris and Donna Burrows.

            Dickerson is president of the Upsilon Sigma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and MS/LA Regional Reporter; member of the Indian Delegation, Sigma Kappa Delta and Honors Program; orientation leader; student worker and participant in intramural sports at ICC. Her honors include HEADWAE recipient, Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise and Coca-Cola Silver Scholar. Dickerson’s other activities are film internship and member of Amory Church of Christ. She is the daughter of Tim and Jennifer Dickerson.

            Each two-year college in Mississippi may nominate students to the All-USA Academic Team. Nominations are based on academic performance and service to the college and community.

            The All-USA Community College Academic Team is presented by USA TODAY and Phi Theta Kappa. Twenty students will be selected from the state teams for the All-USA College and Community First Teams and will receive a $2,500 cash award and extensive national recognition through coverage in USA TODAY and usatoday.com.
