Four ICC sophomores named to All-Mississippi Academic Team

             Four Itawamba Community College sophomores have been named to the All-Mississippi Academic Team.

            They include Fields Ferguson of Batesville; Hunter Holley of Nettleton; Karla Morales and Lillian Salem, both of Tupelo.

            Ferguson is a graduate of the Ramp School of Ministry, and in May he will earn his associate’s degree in business administration at ICC. He plans to transfer to Mississippi State University. At ICC, he is a member of the choir, chamber singers and CenterStage. Currently he serves the Ramp Church in Hamilton, Ala. as a member of Chosen, a fiery dance ministry team. He is married to Taylor Bain Ferguson.

            A graduate of Amory High School, Holley is majoring in biological sciences at ICC, where he is the president of the Upsilon Sigma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at the Fulton Campus. He is also Mississippi/Louisiana PTK Regional Reporter and a member of the Indian Delegation and Science Club. Last year he served as the Monroe County representative for the Student Government Association. Among his honors are president’s list, ICC’s student representative for HEADWAE and recipient of numerous scholarships, including one of 10 in the nation to receive the prestigious Pearson Scholarship. He has also been selected as ICC’s first Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship semifinalist. Holley attends the First United Methodist Church in Amory, and his community service has included Angel Tree, daycare volunteer and the HIA project. He is the son of Melesa Rakestraw and Billy Holley.

            Morales is majoring in psychology at ICC where she is the PTK Beta Tau Sigma Chapter president, student representative for the curriculum committee and a member of the Student Government Association and Indian Delegation. Her honors include president’s list. Morales plans to transfer to the University of Mississippi. She is the daughter of Calipso Pimentel and Jose Morales.

            Salem is a business major at ICC, where she is Phi Theta Kappa vice president of fellowship and a member of the Indian Delegation and Diversity Club. Her other activities include Sunday school day teacher. A president’s list scholar at ICC, Salem plans to transfer to the University of Mississippi. Her parents are Rima Salem and the late Sam Salem.

            One of the nominees will receive a $1,000 scholarship, but all four will be eligible for additional scholarships.

            Each two-year college in Mississippi may nominate two students per campus to the All-USA Academic Team. Nominations are based on academic performance and service to the college and community.

            The All-USA Community College Academic Team is presented by USA TODAY and Phi Theta Kappa. Twenty students will be selected from the state teams for the All-USA College and Community First Teams and will receive a $2,500 cash award and extensive national recognition through coverage in USA TODAY and usatoday.com.
