General 0 Jake Hartfield of Fulton, director of recruitment and orientation, and Nathan Ward of Mooreville, English instructor and supplemental instruction technician, at Itawamba Community College have been selected as participants for the 2021-22 Mississippi Community College Leadership Academy. A native of Raymond, Hartfield has been director of student activities and orientation leaders sponsor since 2018. He will transition to his recruitment and orientation position July 1. His educational background includes the associate’s degree from Hinds Community College and both the bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Mississippi State University, where he is currently enrolled in the doctoral program in community college leadership. He currently teaches an orientation leader course at ICC. At ICC, Hartfield serves on several committees, including COVID-19 Reopening Task Force, Student Honors Selection Committee (Chair), Community Relations and Standards Committee, Commencement Committee, Strategic Planning Council, Strategic Enrollment Management Team, Student Activities Committee (chair), Academic Calendar and Enrollment Committee and College Council. He has been a member of numerous professional organizations. His honors include first place in Summer Orientation Booklet from the College Public Relations Association of Mississippi and graduate of the ICC Leadership Development Institute. Hartfield previously served as area coordinator and residence life coordinator at the University of South Carolina and graduate assistant and residence director at Mississippi State University. He and his wife, Amanda, have two children, Evie-Kay and Henry. The Hartfields are members of Harrisburg Baptist Church in Tupelo. A 1998 graduate of ICC, Ward earned both the bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Mississippi. Since 2007, he has served as an English instructor at ICC, where he also has been a supplemental instruction technician since 2018. His employment history includes New Albany High School, Tupelo High School, the University of Mississippi and adjunct English instructor at ICC. Ward serves as Sigma Kappa Delta faculty sponsor at ICC. He is a member of ICC’s Curriculum and Academic Calendar and Enrollment committees and a student adviser. His professional memberships and affiliations include SKD, the National Council of Teachers of English and National Writing Project/University of Mississippi Writing Project. His honors are Mississippi Humanities Teacher Award for 2021, William Winter Faculty Scholar Award, Lamplighter Award, HEADWAE 2018 Outstanding Faculty honoree, ICC Leadership Development Institute graduate and QEP Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award. He is the worship leader at Trinity Baptist Church in Fulton. Ward and his wife, Kelly, are the parents of Ely, Braydy and Luke. The Mississippi Community College Leadership Academy was developed in the spring of 2009 to address the projected need for upper-level leaders in the Mississippi community college system. ICC's Howard to receive PTK Paragon award Bradley Howard of Saltillo, Computer Science Division chair at Itawamba Community College, has been selected as a recipient of Phi Theta Kappa’s 2022 Paragon Award for New Advisers. He will be among those recognized during PTK Catalyst 2022, the society’s annual convention in Denver, Colo., Apr. 7-9. Howard, who has been employed at ICC since 2006, is sponsor for the STEM and Computer clubs and eLearning lead instructor for computer science. His committee service includes College Council, Commencement, Curriculum, eLearning, Honors Council, Instructional Policies and Planning and Assessment. Howard’s honors include Lamplighter award recipient and sponsor for ICC’s first Top 10 finalist team for the American Association of Community Colleges and National Science Foundation’s 2021 Community College Innovation Challenge. He also cowrote a $20,000 grant that ICC received to implement a STEM Club, STEM week and an Introduction to STEM Professions course. ICC's Dean, Ward selected as prestigious Coca-Cola 2022 Academic Team Scholars Haley Dean of Saltillo has been selected as a Gold Scholar on Coca-Cola’s 2022 Academic Team, and Ely Ward of Mooreville, Silver Scholar. The last time that ICC had Gold and Silver Scholars was in 2016, according to Robin Lowe, Phi Theta Kappa contact adviser. “We are excited to have, once again, two Coca-Cola Scholars this year. These students remind us that the power of resiliency overcomes the toughest obstacles, and they are leaving a lasting legacy to inspire future ICC students.” Dean is majoring in mechanical engineering at ICC, where she is the vice president of scholarship for the Phi Theta Kappa Upsilon Sigma Chapter; member of the Honors College, Baptist Student Union, Science Club and Indian Delegation; president of the Student Government Association and a previous Orientation Leader. ICC's Sumerel selected PTK Distinguished College Administrator Award recipient Dr. Michelle Sumerel of Mooreville, vice president of instructional services at Itawamba Community College, has been selected as a recipient of the Distinguished College Administrator award presented by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Sumerel is one of 28 college administrators who will be recognized during PTK Catalyst 2022, the society’s annual convention in Denver, Colo., Apr. 7-9. Sumerel has been vice president of Instructional Services at Itawamba Community College since Jan. 4, 2016, but a member of the ICC family since 2006. She has served as lead online instructor for sociology and criminal justice, director for the Law Enforcement Technology program, eLearning coordinator and dean of eLearning Instruction. Her educational background includes the bachelor’s degree from the University of North Alabama and the master’s and doctorate degrees from Mississippi State University. Sumerel is a member of several professional and civic organizations and is the recipient of multiple awards and recognitions. Morris selected as ICC's Mississippi Humanities Teacher Award nominee Keith Morris of Tupelo has been selected as Itawamba Community College’s Mississippi Humanities Teacher Award nominee for 2022. He will present “Little Boxes” at 6 p.m., Mar. 28, in the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium at the Fulton Campus. Morris will be honored at the Mississippi Humanities Council Awards Ceremony Mar. 25 at 5:30 p.m. at the Old Capitol Museum in Jackson. “I teach alongside such talented, hardworking folks,” Morris said. “I feel honored to receive this award, not just for myself, but as a simple representative of my team.” Morris earned the bachelor’s degree from the University of Mississippi and master’s degree from Mississippi State University. Megan Eidt selected as 2025 ICC's Mississippi Humanities Teacher Award nominee Megan Lewis Eidt of Tupelo has been selected as Itawamba Community College’s Mississippi Humanities Teacher Award nominee for 2025. Eidt will be among those honored at the Mississippi Humanities Council Awards Ceremony March 28, 2025 at the Two Mississippi Museums in Jackson. The event pays tribute to outstanding faculty in traditional humanities fields at each of the state’s institutions of higher learning. Since 2004, she has taught history at ICC, where her activities have included former two-term president of the Tupelo Campus Faculty Association and former adviser to the ICC Political Science and Humanities Clubs. Her professional memberships include ICC Faculty Association, National Council on Public History, Atlanta History Center and American Historical Association. Eidt earned the bachelor’s degree from the University of Mississippi; master’s degree from Mississippi College; and additional coursework from the Center of Bi-Lingual and Multi-Cultural Studies in Cuernavaca, Mexico.
