All-Mississippi Academic Team

Four Itawamba Community College sophomores have been named to the All-Mississippi Academic Team. They include Serenity Hawkins of Saltillo, Laken Jones of Belden, Kathryn Knippers of Corinth and Allysa Lipsey of Pontotoc. Hawkins, who is majoring in social work, is a member of the Indian Delegation, Tupelo Campus Student Government Association secretary, Phi Theta Kappa (Beta Tau Sigma chapter) recording secretary and a peer tutor in the Student Success Center. Her honors include Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior and Community Colleges. She is also a member of NorthStar Church. Her parents are Amanda Scates and Tim Hawkins. Jones’s activities at ICC include All-American Marching Band, Indian Delegation, Baptist Student Union and the L.I.N. (Live Indian News) Report. She was recently selected to Who’s Who Among Community and Junior Colleges. An occupational therapy major at ICC, she is the daughter of Tracy and Kimberla Jones. Calliope authors

The work of several area students will be featured in The Calliope during the spring semester at Itawamba Community College. The poets and their work include Kate Scaife (“Never to Wake”) of Amory; Joshua Sutton (“The Tyranny of Season”), Christopher Roberts (“The Dam and the Cloud”), both of Fulton;  Justin Gary (“STRESS”), Rebecca Owens (“El Aire Libre”), both of New Albany; Jordan Ginn (“My Shoes”) of Pearl; Lynnse Phelps (“Accidental Fire”), Grace Gault (“My Sin”), Madison Nanney (“Winter Must Come, for I need to Fall Out of Love”), all of Saltillo; and Abigail Chase (“One Night Only”) of Smithville. Spring Registration Continues

Registration for the 2017 spring semester at Itawamba Community College will continue through Dec. 16. To register, visit the Student Affairs offices on either the Fulton or Tupelo campuses between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., weekdays. Locations are the Student Support Center (Tupelo) and David C. Cole Student Services building (Fulton). Academic, career and technical, eLearning (online) and workforce opportunities are always available in an extensive schedule, which includes both day and evening classes at Fulton, Tupelo and Belden. New or returning students, age 23 or older, who have not been enrolled in college for the previous two years, can apply for an Adult Learner Incentive Scholarship, which provides half-tuition for one semester. Criteria for selection include Mississippi resident, enrollment in a minimum of six semester hours, meeting admission requirements and in good standing with ICC. The scholarship cannot be combined with other ICC institutional scholarships. The next opportunity to register for the spring semester will be during open registration, scheduled for Jan. 5 and 6. Skullduggery

“Skullduggery,” a collection of wheel thrown pottery and ceramic porcelain wall hangings by Ian Childers of the Mississippi University for Women art faculty, is currently on display in the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center Gallery at the Itawamba Community College Fulton Campus. Childers spent his youth in Philadelphia, Pa. mired in punk rock, hip hop and the rave culture of the 1990s. He apprenticed as a tattoo artist immediately out of high school and spent his evenings writing graffiti, riding BMX bikes, going to shows and causing general mayhem. In the late 1990s, Childers left the northeast in search of a new perspective. He found himself as an art student at a small liberal arts college in north Georgia, where he was introduced to ceramics as a requirement for graduation. After his first class, he was completely hooked. “Life in Georgia was uncomfortably slow for me; sitting at a potter’s wheel was the first thing I found in the south that helped calm my angst and direct my energy towards something creative,” Childers said. ICC's occupational therapy program

Itawamba Community College’s occupational therapy technology program has been recognized as one of the best in the nation by The Community for Accredited Online Schools (AccreditedSchoolsOnline.org). Employment Training

Itawamba Community College’s Career Services will begin employment training immediately for 16- to 24-year-old individuals who need career counseling and are serious about exploring employment opportunities. Enrollments are currently being accepted for new training sessions in Chickasaw, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe and Pontotoc counties. ICC Career Services can help to open doors for opportunities in certified nursing assistant; welding; heating, ventilation and air conditioning; and basic manufacturing skills certification. Jones named Health Science dean

Rilla Jones of Corinth has been named dean of Health Science Instruction at Itawamba Community College. Jones earned the bachelor’s degree in medical technology from the University of Mississippi and the master’s degree in education from Mississippi State University. She has completed coursework in community college leadership from both the University of Mississippi and Mississippi State University. In addition, she has received technical training from the School of Medical Technology at the North Mississippi Medical Center. Her certifications include American Society of Clinical Pathologists and Licensure Tennessee Laboratory License. Jones is a member of the Academic Officers Association, Southern Association for Institutional Research, American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the Tennessee State Society for Clinical Microbiology. She previously served as the vice president of Instruction for Northeast Mississippi Community College. Jones has 21 years’ experience as program director and instructor in the Medical Laboratory Technology program at Northeast, where she served as division head for the Allied Health programs and assistant division head for Health Sciences.
