ICC graduates receive diplomas, certificates during May 16 ceremonies Approximately 1,000 Itawamba Community College graduates crossed the stage at the Davis Event Center on the Fulton Campus, May 16, during three commencement ceremonies and were rewarded with Associate of Arts or Associate of Applied Science degrees or certificates. Among them included a 15-year-old and his mother, a native of South Africa, a 32-year-old high school equivalency graduate, an amputee and one who started the pursuit of her college diploma more than 20 years ago. Lathan Jon Austin Nunley of New Albany said he “nervously but excitedly stepped into the world of college. Today, I’m proud to say I’m graduating with my first degree – alongside my mother, who has supported me every step of the way.” His educational journey began at home where his mother homeschooled him ‘from birth to eighth grade.’ “With her guidance and the encouragement of those around me, I was taught to believe that anything is possible. ICC's Stevenson, Harris complete prestigious MCCLA Itawamba Community College’s Chris Stevenson of Fulton and John Wayne Harris of Shannon have recently completed the 2024-25 Mississippi Community College Leadership Academy. A member of the ICC family since 2010, Stevenson, who is the dean of Academic Instruction, previously served as American History instructor and chair of the Social Science Division. He earned the associate’s degree from ICC, bachelor’s degree from Mississippi State University and master’s degree from the University of Mississippi. His honors include William Winter Scholar (2014) and John and Beth Cleveland Instructor of the Year (2018). Stevenson is a member of Mississippi Professional Educators. He and his wife, Jessi, have two children, Rourke and Riley. They attend the Orchard in Fulton. Harris, who is the director of Physical Plant Operations, joined the ICC family in 2008. His previous positions include sound technician, maintenance technician/energy manager and director of projects and energy management systems. ICC formally opens state-of-the-art Robotics Lab at Belden Center Itawamba Community College formally opened its state-of-the-art robotics lab at the Belden Center during a ribbon cutting ceremony today (May 8). “It is an exciting day for our college, our students, our faculty and our region as we officially unveil our new state-of-the-art Robotics Lab, a facility that not only represents the future of workforce training, but also our steadfast commitment to innovation, opportunity and excellence,” said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen. “The $1.2 million renovation made possible through the support of our friends in the Mississippi Legislature reflects a true investment in the lives and futures of our students and the communities we serve. ICC's nursing students celebrate week, month and graduation When the pages of the calendar turned to May, a special celebration began for nurses across the nation. Every year, from May 6-12, those in the profession are recognized for their service and dedication to caring for others and improving the health of patients through National Nurses Week. But as special as nurses are and most deserving of a celebration, the week is just a small part of the larger National Nurses Month, which will be observed through May 31. “Students who are enrolled in Itawamba Community College’s Associate Degree Nursing program prepare to take the NCLEX-RN and subsequently to become Registered Nurses, who work in collaboration with physicians and other members of a healthcare team,” said Tonya Vaughn, dean of Health Science Instruction. “They fill numerous roles, including but not limited to, disease prevention, coping with illness, patient assessments, health educators and advocacy. ICC schedules Pixels, Plates and Paints summer camp Registration is underway at the Itawamba Community College Belden Center for Pixels, Plates and Paints summer camp for ages 12-15. Sessions include June 22, 8-10 a.m., STEM; July 8, 8-11 a.m., art; July 15, 8-10 a.m., culinary and July 22, 8 a.m.-noon, digital. The focus of the sessions include: STEM – Each group will receive a complete kit to use their creativity and problem-solving skills to assemble a working solar-powered car, which they will also race. Art – Through a hands-on session, participants will learn simple techniques and create their own “masterpieces” to take home. Culinary – Students learn essential kitchen safety and sanitation skills as well as enjoy a hands-on cooking experience with recipes that are simple and fun to recreate at home. Digital – Participants will learn the basics of iPhone photography and videography and take it to the next level by editing videos using a simple Web-based platform. ICC Welding/Cutting students celebrate their career path every day Although the nation commemorates April as National Welding Month, students in Kent Lewis’s Welding and Cutting Technology class at Itawamba Community College’s Belden Center celebrate their career path and ultimate profession every day. This year’s theme is “Connected by Welding: Bridging Communities and Industries,” and ICC’s students definitely do. According to Dylan Baldwin, dean of Career Education, ICC’s welding students are an excellent example of the definition of community partners. “They contribute to worthwhile events and charities while sharing their talents as often as possible. Every project provides an opportunity to demonstrate their creativity while honing their skills in their chosen profession.” ICC’s welding students come from different backgrounds and have different career expectations, but they are bound by their love and passion for welding.
