ICC schedules three pathway programs to begin Mar. 2 at Belden Center

Registration is underway at the Itawamba Community College Belden Center for three pathway programs that are scheduled to begin Mar. 2. They include Small Engine Repair, Introduction to Welding and Cutting and Basics of Residential Wiring. Small Engine Repair will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9 p.m. through Apr. 29. The 16-session program will prepare participants for a career as they develop small engine repair skills in basic maintenance, recoil systems, fuel systems, ignition systems/electrical circuits and disassembling and rebuilding small engines. Successful completion of the program entitles the participant to have an opportunity to obtain an entry-level technician position at an existing small engine repair business or to open his/her own shop. Successful completers will receive information about how to test for the nationally-recognized technician certification exam. The cost of the program is $369. Introduction to Welding and Cutting meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9 p.m. through Apr. 8.  The class is designed to provide entry-level skills in welding and cutting and to prepare students to do the basic GMAW and SMAW welding jobs that some industries and small businesses require. ...

ICC signs preferred candidate program agreement with MHP; only community college in the state selected

  Itawamba Community College signed a Memorandum of Understanding for a Preferred Candidate Program with the Mississippi Highway Patrol, Jan. 26, at the Tupelo Campus.             The initiative is a pilot program that will be implemented at ICC, the only community college in the state selected.             “Itawamba Community College is more than excited about this partnership with the Mississippi Highway Patrol,” said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen. “According to research, having successfully completed a college degree substantially improves the knowledge and abilities of officers on a vast range of areas from the criminal justice system to conceptual and managerial skills.”             The agreement will allow those who are enrolled to pursue either an A.A. or A.A.S. degree in ICC’s Criminal Justice program, meet with an MHP recruiter and apply for the MHP Preferred Candidate Program to skip weeks of the Mississippi Highway Patrol Academy.             In order to graduate from the MHP Preferred Candidate Program, students must complete one or more semesters of the MHP Candidates on Rapid Entry curriculum, earn the associate’s degree from ICC, meet the C.O.R.E. Spotlight: Lab Tech Margie Thomas assists with ICC COVID precautions

            Margie Thomas now spends her days testing for COVID-19 at the Fulton Campus, a key component of the effort ICC continues to make to keep its community safe.             But her career as a medical professional started 10 years ago when she completed a phlebotomy course at ICC.  Along the way, she’s also earned PBT American Society for Clinical Pathology certification and a medical transcriptionist certificate.             Her career has taken her to the North Mississippi Medical Center where she worked as a phlebotomist technician for six years and to the Magnolia Regional Health Center where she was a PT in the emergency room for two years.             In today’s pandemic world, Thomas is now filling a significant need at ICC, where she was employed as the COVID lab technician last October. She clocks in at 8 a.m., Monday through Friday, and then she checks her schedule to see how many appointments she has for the day because “someone could have gotten sick and needs to be tested quickly.” Then she checks to make sure she ...

ICC Board of Trustees elects officers for 2021

Steve Eaton of Houston has been elected chairman of the Itawamba Community College Board of Trustees for 2021.             Other officers include Gill Simmons of Tupelo, first vice chairman; Marilyn Sumerford of Smithville, second vice chairman; Steve Coleman of Pontotoc, secretary; and Stacy Russell of Fulton, immediate past chairman.             Also serving on ICC’s Board of Trustees are Amy Anderson, Dr. Jerome Smith, both of Okolona; Ollie Young of Houston; John Ellison of Woodland; Ronnie Gholston, Don Loden, both of Fulton; Mark Tigner of Mantachie; D. ICC inks partnership with ATS to advance Mississippi’s skilled technical workforce

  Itawamba Community College signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Advanced Technology Services, Jan. 19, to designate the Belden Center as one of five regional hubs for its skilled maintenance training.                 ATS is a leading solutions provider with more than 30 years of proven experience in reliability-centered industrial maintenance.                 According to the MOU, ATS will provide weekly skilled maintenance training at ICC- Belden for its regional team, but additionally will open those classes to other area business and industry, according to Dr. Joe Lowder, dean of economic and community services.                 ICC will provide space, instructors and market the classes to other companies to help ATS accomplish its goal, Lowder said. Also, the partnership will allow for other opportunities to grow the skilled trades in ICC’s area, such as the Top Tech event, a collaboration between ICC and ATS, which brought together top skilled employees who competed for a grand prize last fall at the Belden Center. Dr. Bruce Ingram to represent ICC as William Winter Scholar

            Dr. Bruce Ingram of Wenasoga, social science instructor, has been selected as Itawamba Community College’s William Winter Scholar for 2021.             He will be among statewide recipients to be honored during opening and closing ceremonies at the 32nd Annual Natchez Literary and Cinema Celebration, Feb. 22-27.             Ingram, who is in his 15th year at ICC, teaches U.S. History I and II and has been the instructor for College Life. In 2006, he was the first lead online instructor responsible for history, philosophy, geography and government. From 2008-10, he served as Distance Learning coordinator. He is a charter member of the ICC Leadership Institute (2008-09) and was a Phi Theta Kappa adviser from 2017-20.             His educational background includes the bachelor’s degree from Blue Mountain College and the master’s and doctorate, both from the University of Mississippi.             Ingram has also taught in the North Tippah School District (Walnut and Falkner High Schools) and the Alcorn School District, and he has served as pastor of Chalybeate Baptist Church. ICC to host Coffee Convos to assist high school seniors with admission

            Itawamba Community College is hosting Coffee Convos at several locations throughout its five-county district to assist high school seniors with admissions, scholarships and housing.             Recruiters Taylor Tutor and Jordan Smith will be available to answer questions and for guidance in the application process.             The locations include Tupelo River Coffee, Jan. 19, noon-2 p.m.; The Grounds Coffee Shop (ICC-Fulton), Jan. 26, noon-2 p.m.; Blacksmith BBQ in Pontotoc, Jan. 28, noon-2 p.m.; The Coffee Pot in Amory, Feb. 2, noon-2 p.m.; and Gather Coffee and Brew in Houston, Feb. 9, noon-2 p.m.             A sign up link is being sent to the students for whom email addresses are available. Pathway programs to begin soon at ICC-Belden

Registration is underway at the Itawamba Community College Belden Center for several pathway programs that are scheduled to begin soon. They include SHRM-Certified Professional Exam Prep Course, Jan. 28; Certified Nursing Assistant, Feb. 1; and Human Resources Assistant, Feb. 18. The SHRM-Certified Professional Exam Prep Course will meet Thursdays from 6-9 p.m. The program is designed for current HR professionals who would like to advance their careers by earning the nationally-recognized SHRM-CP credential to be recognized as industry experts and viewed as valuable assets to their organization. The curriculum used in this course is the Society for Human Resource Management 2020 Learning System, which provides an in-depth overview of the knowledge and industry expertise needed to sit for and pass the SHRM-CP certification exam. Key topics include behavioral competencies and technical knowledge. Certified Nursing Assistant will meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 5-9 p.m. The program prepares participants to take the exam to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. ICC schedules Preparing for the ACT sessions

The Continuing Education Department of Itawamba Community College has scheduled several sessions for Preparing for the ACT. All meet on Saturdays from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m.             Math and science sessions include Jan. 30, Apr. 10 and May 29. English and reading are offered Jan. 23, Apr. 3 and June 5.             ICC’s ACT prep instructors use intensive classroom review procedures in English, reading, science reasoning and math that focus on strategies for improving scores by three methods: review of all concepts tested, tips for overcoming test anxiety and guides for “’studying smart” that will help improve test-day performance. Instructors effectively communicate techniques to help students perform with confidence. Pre-test and post-test full-length ACT practice tests are administered to measure performance. Spring 2021 registration continues

             Registration for the 2021 spring semester at Itawamba Community College will continue through Jan. 15 for traditional full-term day and night classes.             Traditional full-term day and first eight-week classes begin Jan. 11; and eLearning full-term and first eight-week classes, Jan. 19. The last day to add eLearning first eight-week classes is Jan. 20 and eLearning full-term classes, Jan. 22             Financial aid is available as well as adult learner scholarships.             Academic, career education, eLearning (online) and workforce opportunities are available in an extensive schedule, which includes both day and evening classes at Fulton, Tupelo and Belden. Instructional delivery methods include face-to-face, face-to-face/online hybrid, face-to-face/ZOOM hybrid, ZOOM only and online.
