ICC provides assistance with FAFSA completion

            Itawamba Community College is offering an opportunity to assist prospective students with completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.             Students in ICC’s five-county district can make appointments with a financial aid adviser on designated dates, while home-schooled students and adult learners have an option to sign up on Dec. 16. Appointments, which are scheduled in 30-minute increments, begin at 8 a.m. and end at 4 p.m.              The schedule includes Aberdeen High School, Nov. 6; Amory High School, Dec. 2; Baldwyn High School, Nov. 27, 28; Houston High School, Dec. 11; Itawamba Agricultural High School, Dec. 9; Mantachie High School, Dec. 8; Mooreville High School, Oct. 21; Nettleton High School, Nov. 13; North Pontotoc High School, Oct. 20, Nov. 3; Okolona High School, Nov. 11; Pontotoc High School, Oct. 14; Shannon High School, Dec. 15; South Pontotoc High School, Oct. 22, Nov. 10; and Tupelo Christian Preparatory School, Dec. 8. ICC offers career pathway options in October

            Registration is underway for several career pathway classes offered during October at Itawamba Community College. Both online and face-to-face options are available. Students who meet eligibility requirements may qualify for tuition assistance.             They include Electrician Assistant, a face-to-face class offered at the Belden Center. It begins Oct. 19, will meet from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, through Nov. 9. The program provides the foundational knowledge of basic math and safety rules; the use of hand, measuring and power tools; basic electricity and residential wiring.             Online training options and their start dates are Medical Spanish Series (Oct. 14), Medical Terminology (Oct. 14 and Nov. 11), Microsoft Word 2019/Office 365 Series (Oct. 14), Microsoft Excel 2019/Office 365 Series (Oct. 14), Introduction to Microsoft Outlook (Oct. 14 and Nov. 11), Accounting Fundamentals with Quickbooks (Oct. 14), Manufacturing Fundamentals (Oct. 14 and Nov. 11) and Manufacturing Applications (Oct. 14 and Nov. 11).             ICC also offers online training in forklift operation and ...

ICC's Surgical Technology program adds laparoscopic simulator

            Itawamba Community College’s Surgical Technology majors will now benefit from top-of-the line equipment as they prepare to enter their field of study.             ICC’s program is the first in the state that has added a laparoscopic simulator, which is a tool that demonstrates virtually all major abdominal surgical procedures, chest procedures and pelvic procedures, allowing learners to begin to familiarize themselves with performance methodologies.             Simulation training services can augment learners’ dexterity and visualization; eliminate the ergonomic discomfort of long surgery services and work to turn simulators into an essential technology for the patient, learners and hospitals.             “Access to this simulator, which is used in medical schools across the country, will enable our students to develop advanced technological literacy as they train to become vital members of the surgical team,” said Tonya Vaughn, program director. “It is absolutely remarkable.”             Vaughn said that simulation offers a way for learners to master new skill sets without practicing on real-life patients. “This is important because often the complexity ...

ICC selects 2020 Alumnus of the Year, Athletic Hall of Fame inductees

            Itawamba Community College has selected its Alumnus of the Year and Athletic Hall of Fame inductees for 2020.             The honorees include Jim Mounce of Tupelo, Alumnus of the Year, and Kenneth “Kebo” Davis of Okolona and Tyson Lee of Germantown, Tenn., Athletic Hall of Fame.             A native of Ecru, Mounce is a 1964 graduate of Itawamba Junior College. During his two years, he was a member of the football team, the baseball team, sophomore class president and class favorite, cutest. His educational background also includes the bachelor’s degree from the University of Mississippi; juris doctorate from the University of Mississippi School of Law and the master’s degree from Bellevue University. From 1969-85, Mounce practiced law in Tupelo, and from 1985-2000, he chief operating officer for Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society and president, CEO and chairman of the board for Woodmen Life from 2000 until he retired in 2009. ICC Food Service Pathway class to begin Oct. 5

           Itawamba Community College has scheduled a Food Service Pathway class at the Belden Center (3200 Adams Farm Rd.) beginning Oct. 5.             Classes will meet Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. through Nov. 3.             The program includes Serve Safe® Food Manager Certification, Serve Safe® Alcohol Certification, CPR, certificate of completion, proper food handling standards, kitchen safety practices, culinary techniques, interview skills and résumé building, money handling and front of the house and back of the house operations.             For more information or to register, contact program director Christy Scheuer at acscheuer@iccms.edu or (662) 407-1505; or pathway coordinator Josh Gammill at jegammill@iccms.edu or (662) 407-1569.  

Registration continues for eLearning classes

ICC's Fleming-Parker receives bicycle helmet grant to benefit child care centers

          Children in Itawamba Community College’s Child Care centers will benefit from the care and concern of Associate Degree Nursing instructor Dr. Mary Ann Fleming-Parker of Tupelo.             This summer, Fleming-Parker applied for and received a Prevention and Education grant through the Traumatic Brain Injury/Spinal Cord Injury Trust Fund, through which 75 bicycle helmets were provided for the child care participants at the college.             ICC Associate Degree Nursing program director Dr. Dana Walker said that as part of their coursework, sophomore students in the Family Centered Nursing Care course develop and present health promotion teaching projects to children at the Child Development Centers at both the Fulton and Tupelo campuses.             The students have been at the CDCs on both campuses most Tuesdays and Thursdays since Sept. 1 to assist with temperature checks and hand washing as students arrive and then present a variety of health promotion projects, Fleming-Parker said. ICC pathway programs set to begin in October

             Registration is underway at the Itawamba Community College Belden Center for several pathway programs that are scheduled to begin in October.             They include Certified Nursing Assistant (two classes), Commercial Truck Driving, Food Service Pathway, Manufacturing Skills Basic Certification, Basic Construction and Quality Improvement Associate.             Certified Nursing Assistant will meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 5-9 p.m. Oct. 12-Dec. 16, and the day class will meet Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Oct. 12-27. The program prepares participants to take the exam to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. Upon successful program and examination completion, employment could be available in nursing homes, medical centers, home healthcare providers and clinics.             Commercial Truck Driving begins Oct. 12 and will meet Monday through Friday from 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. through Nov. 6. The program prepares individuals to drive Class A semi trucks and other commercial vehicles. It includes instruction in operating diesel-powered vehicles, loading and unloading cargo, reporting delays or accidents on the road, verifying loads against shipping records and keeping necessary records.             Food Service Pathway will meet Monday ...

ICC fall semester enrollment increases

            Itawamba Community College’s fall enrollment has increased even in the unique environment caused by COVID-19.             With full-time enrollment beginning at more than 5,000 and an increase in credit hours, ICC also has 705 students who are participating in the dual credit program, which enables high school students to earn college hours.             The increase is determined by comparing enrollments for the 2019 and 2020 fall semesters.             “This is very exciting news, since the increases are in headcount, full-time equivalencies and credit hours,” said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen. “The increase in the number of students that ICC is serving is significant because we have additional opportunities to provide a solid educational foundation and the best start for those in our five-county district and beyond.”             Enrollment figures include online, academic and career education classes, but not workforce totals, which are not measured on semester basis, Allen said.
