ICC's Salinas to participate in NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars course

            Itawamba Community College sophomore Diana Salinas of Golden has been selected to participate in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Community College Aerospace Scholars five-week online course.             Top-performing students in the online course receive an invitation to the fall NASA experience in March 2021. The program provides those selected with a four-day in-person learning experience at a NASA center.                     A computer science major, Salinas is the reporter for the Phi Theta Kappa MS/LA Region and the vice president of leadership for the Upsilon Sigma chapter. She is also president of ICC’s Computer Science Club and the vice president of the Fulton Campus Student Government Association. She plans to transfer to the University of Mississippi to earn the Bachelor of Science degree. Her parents are Gabriela Cortes and Santos Vazquez.             Students nationwide are chosen to participate through a competitive process from among applicants who are U.S. citizens currently pursuing their initial undergraduate degree at a community college. ICC's Ward selected Humanities Teacher Award nominee

            Nathan Ward of Mooreville has been selected as Itawamba Community College’s Mississippi Humanities Teacher Award nominee for 2021.             He will present “Crossing the Bar: Attaining Student Success,” at 6 p.m., Jan. 26, in the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium at the Fulton Campus. Limited seating will be available, but livestream will be provided.             He will be honored at the Mississippi Humanities Council Public Awards ceremony, Mar. 26, in Jackson.             “This is an unexpected, but completely appreciated honor,” Ward said. “ICC demands success on every level, and it is hard for me to imagine working anywhere else.”             A 1998 graduate of ICC, Ward earned both the bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Mississippi. Since 2007, he has served as an English instructor at ICC, where he also has been a supplemental instruction technician since 2018. ICC's SKD inducts 2020 fall members

            Several Itawamba Community College students have been inducted into Sigma Kappa Delta for the 2020 fall semester.             They include Perashia Dunlap, Rebekah Threadgill, both of Aberdeen; Pamela Dankins, Mattie Knox, Savannah Legaspi, both of Amory; Noah Locastro, Chandler Wall, both of Fulton; Carsen Enlow of Guntown; Alexia Ware of Hamilton; Grace Bauer, Caitlin McGivney, both of Mooreville; Lillian Angle, Emma Phillips, both of Pontotoc; Elizabeth Gregory, Kylee Steward, both of Saltillo; Lexus Black of Tremont; Sara Baker, Laurel Jayes, Julie Laney, all of Tupelo; and Charlotte Drane of Wesson.             Sigma Kappa Delta is the English Honor Society for two-year colleges. Members have the opportunity to share their love of literature and linguistics with like-minded peers, participate in rewarding activities and be recognized for their accomplishments. ICC selects 2021 Pom Squad

            Itawamba Community College has selected members of its 2021 Pom Squad.             They include Abigail Hitt of Amory; Kelsi Little of Columbus; Ashton Bryan of Fulton; Sydney Scribner of Mooreville; Maleigh Collier of Nettleton; Madison Foster of New Albany; Lydia Walker of Olive Branch; Mabry Chamblee of Pontotoc; Emma Cate Sparks of Saltillo; Kaiyah Ruth, Alexius Young, both of Shannon and  A’jalauh Caldwell of Sherman.             The ICC Pom Squad performs at all home basketball games. The director is Roxie Thomas-Clayton of Tupelo.            

Student work selected for ICC's Calliope

            The work of several area students will be featured in The Calliope, which is scheduled for publication during the 2021 spring semester at Itawamba Community College.             The poets and their work include Anna Austin of New Albany, “Are You Like Me?;” Eden Cooper of Russellville, Ala., “For Any Pronoun;” Le-Ann Cummings of Guntown, “Power of Love;” Pamela Dankins of Amory, “Oh, How You Loved the Rain;” Tandraniqua Galloway of Jackson, “Untitled;” Riley Hall of Pontotoc, “HOPE;” Ashlyn Holcomb of Fulton, “How Could I Have Known?;” Faith Knox of Houlka, “Fall of Life;” Ta’Niya Patterson of Tupelo, “French Toast;” Kylie Seymore of Smithville, “Am I Really Fine…;” J’mya Sims of Holly Springs, “Untitled;” and Whitney Williams of Fulton, “Candle in the Window.”             The Calliope is a journal of art and poetry. ICC offers new course in Enhanced Forklift Operator Training

            Itawamba Community College will offer a new course, Enhanced Forklift Operator Training, Dec. 15 from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at the Belden Center.             Topics include the requirements of the OSHA Powered Industrial Truck Regulation 29 CFR 1910.178, safe powered industrial truck operation and how forklifts work, identification of operating hazards as well as the general principles of safe operation and how to properly inspect and maintain a forklift. No previous experience in forklift operation is required.             According to ICC Pathway Coordinator Josh Gammill, “This eight-hour class will provide students the opportunity to receive hands-on training on three different classifications of forklifts: Standup Rider (Class 1), Order Selector (Class 2) and LP Gas Powered Sit-Down Forklift (Class 4).”             Cost of the course is $85.             For more information or to preregister, call (662) 407-1500 or email rakelly@iccms.edu.

ICC's Guntharp represents all 15 community colleges during significant C Spire MissiON announcement

            Itawamba Community College Systems Engineer Jason Guntharp of Fulton represented all 15 Mississippi public two-year institutions during a press briefing Thursday to announce their addition to a statewide science, engineering and technology research and development consortium called the Mississippi Optical Network (MissiON).             Guntharp served as chair of the subcommittee, which assisted with the addition of Mississippi’s community colleges to the C Spire initiative.             Additional speakers for the virtual press conference included Hu Meena, president and CEO of C Spire; Dr. Andrea Mayfield, executive director of the Mississippi Community College Board; David Sliman, CIO of the University of Southern Mississippi; and Jim Richmond, vice president of marketing for C Spire.             They discussed the addition of community colleges to the network, the boost for distance learning, efforts to train and equip students for future jobs in Mississippi employers and benefits for the state’s economy through the MissiON network.             “As Mississippi’s leading broadband communications provider, C Spire is proud to provide innovative, leading-edge technology and the latest fiber optic infrastructure to help expand the size of ...

ICC to offer Construction Management Technology next fall

            Individuals who want to earn an associate’s degree that will provide employment opportunities in the construction industry have an opportunity to enroll in a new program beginning in August next year at Itawamba Community College.             Construction Management Technology is designed to prepare technicians for employment in mid-level management operations as estimators, planners, project managers, layout specialists or other construction operations.             According to Dean of Career and Technical Education Barry Emison, individuals who are currently employed as professionals will enhance their ability to perform their duties in the construction business.             Upon completion of the two-year curriculum, the student will earn an Associate of Applied Science degree, but successful completion of 30 hours in the selected discipline entitles the individual to receive a career certificate.             According to the Mississippi Department of Employment Security, the average entry-level wage for construction managers is $47,000, and experienced managers earn up to $103,000.             For more information, contact Emison at (662) 407-1409 or email blemison@iccms.edu.

ICC schedules orientation sessions for students who plan to enroll for the 2021 spring semester

           Itawamba Community College has scheduled orientation sessions for students who plan to enroll for the 2021 spring semester.             Recent high school graduates are required to participate in one of the sessions, which are scheduled for Nov. 18, Dec. 10 and Jan. 6, 7 and 8, by registering at iccms.edu/orientation. Options include the Fulton and Tupelo campuses, and students can attend a session regardless of the location they plan to attend in the spring. However, all students, including adult learners, are invited.             “Among the advantages of attending an orientation session are scheduling classes early and choosing from a wide variety of options, including days, times and instructors and possibly completing the process before graduation from high school,” said Dr. Melissa Haab, dean of enrollment services. “The sessions will also provide an opportunity for adult learners to connect with an adviser and to make the transition to college less intimidating.”             During the spring semester, students may choose from five instructional delivery methods, including face-to-face, face-to-face/online hybrid, face-to-face/ZOOM hybrid, ZOOM only and online.             ICC orientation is mandatory ...

ICC formally opens Soccer Complex

            Itawamba Community College formally opened its soccer complex at the Fulton Campus with a ribbon cutting Oct. 30.             The building, which was donated to ICC by First American National Bank several years ago, has been repurposed into a facility that includes a lobby, separate locker rooms for the men’s and women’s teams, a shared meeting space, training room for pregame and postgame taping and icing of players as well as a laundry room. There are also entrances for each team to access the field and mud rooms to store their soccer cleats. Both teams have storage rooms, and there is a restroom in the lobby where game officials can change clothes before and after games.             With the addition of volleyball, ICC’s staff began work on a preliminary design to free locker room space in the Davis Event Center to accommodate the new team as well as visiting basketball and volleyball players, said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen.
